|
|
Hi guys,
I guess to each his own, but why would anyone retire at 40?! I mean I'm almost 40 and have been teaching for more than a dozen years and retirement has never popped into my mind.
I worked in Korea about 8 years ago and as I look back, I don't think I would like to teach for many years there. It was too pointless for me: as a teacher I accomplished very little. No one really took learning English very seriously and the owners knew ABSOLUTELY NOTHING about education nor did they speak English. It was a pointless endeavor, exercise in futility.
Back home in Canada, on the other hand, I work in private French school teaching primary and secondary students. Here I make a difference and retirement never crosses my mind. Of course 45K a year will help you forget it.
I guess it's a question of finding the right job, because, after all, you gotta do something with your time and even the most fun things can become tiresome if you're not really accomplishing something. But maybe like everything else that just applies to some people. |

Besides, I would have to choose the seedy bar, maybe not in South America though.

Don't do it Biff! Don't go to Saudi!--you KNOW what I mean.
We are the lucky generation who will be able to teach until we are 80 or 90 being wheeled into the classroom with an oxy tank attached. Enjoy it! Embrace your fate, remember-character is destiny!--he he |

| That's it folks...I'm quitting EFL.I received a contract on Monday only to have it revoked on Tuesday.Meanwhile,I got a pm alerting me to the fact that some guttersnipe in Qatar has been sending e-mails to employers in the ME telling them not to recruit me because I'm unreliable/or was it because I had the audacity to resign?Teaching uninterested sand people spending 8 hours a day at work while only teaching for 4 of them, passing people whose only talent lay in their ability to use mobile phones, smack their women about, roger their mates and drive like loonies ,no longer has any appeal to me. As I stated in original post, this really is the Mickey Mouse of all industries.I'm in the UK and guess what?I haven't met one person who steals tea bags and toilet paper because he's too tight to buy them.I haven't had to say,'You're right' to an Arab Senior English Teacher who can barely speak English and I don't wake up in the mornings thinking how much longer do I have to stay in this dump and listen to these morons. For any Brits out there who are thinking of quitting there are loads of options back home if you're willing to spend about 5,000 on Health and Safety courses. The demand is massive and the salaries start at about 30,000 and go upto about 60,000 after a couple of years. You can go abroad with these quals, you can teach the courses if you want to stay in education or you can become and inspector/self employed consultant. With the EU expanding you can even live in Europe on a salary that isn't equivalent to the national average wage of Mali. Have fun in EFL but know when to walk away from it. Most people I know in this business are skint for most of the time that they remain in it.Ok so you've got no kids but that may change.Ok so you want to travel but that may change.Ok your folks can help you out but that may change. The clock is ticking and you only live once, unless you are a Buddhist or a cat right? Thoughts on a postcard to- EFL RIP,Train to Nowhere Street,The Lost State,in Get a Life Land. |

| Sorry, Chris, I've been offline for a few days. I'm sure I'm going to regret this, but here goes: Who's there? |
