With this current deal I've been offered a 5 month supply teacher position, which would turn into an additional 2 year Yr. 3 teaching position in August. Anyway, like I said I need to build up experience so I can actually teach at the places I want to teach (i.e. legit international schools). So I could possibly do the 5 months and then break contract, but do you think it would be worth it in the long run?? |
If you want to want to land a job at a good international school, I would avoid breaking a contract unless you are in some kind of danger. In addition to the financial losses many international schools do their best to blacklist people who break contracts from the major recruiting fair/agencies. Some schools are more understanding than others but many won't touch someone who they know had pulled a runner. |

Well this job was not really found through a recruiter (TIEOnline). Also it was actually the principal who raised the issue of breaking contract, stating that he understood considering it is two completely different jobs that I will be doing over the span of the 2.5 year contract. I'm not in any way speaking of a 'runner'...I'm more then happy to provide sufficient notice (haven't even started the job yet!) Basically I want to get out and start working soon, as opposed to sitting around waiting for a better offer. On the other hand I most certainly don't want to develop a bad rep...
It seems like it is impossible to find a job that you are going to be happy with. I am a qualified educator with experience, yet it seems like all of the offers I get are from schools who turn out to be dodgy...
I just want to teach somewhere reasonably enjoyable. Is this a completely absurd goal?! |

Not at all. Get thee to a recruiting fair. They are very good for someone just starting out looking for their 1st contract. Recruiting agencies weed out the dodgiest of schools, although some still manage to slip through. Recruiting on your own the first time is difficult and risky as you don't know the system very well yet and don't have any real contacts to help guide you.
Look at

http://search-associates.com/
http://www.iss.edu/
These are the big 3 recruiting agencies in the US. Most US curriculum international schools work with one or more of these guys. However, you need to sign up NOW for a fair. Time is ticking for this recruiting season. I recommend the UNI fair for the first timer, but I believe their registration deadline in Jan 22nd. I landed my 1st contract at that fair and that school treated me very well. |

As I understand, mandatory school bought health insurance may soon come to be. Talking to a friend in the Henan SAFEA who said come next semester schools may be required to buy health insurance for their laowai.
No other details at the moment. Don't know if anyone else has heard about this |

interesting that you've mentioned SAFEA here...not that i wanna troll, but employers' increasingly seem to be avoiding this organization and its contracts for some reasons...might be some connection in between
cheers and beers to honesty |
