Jeff,

Where have you been all of these years?

This is -- I really hate to say it -- a very standard kind of advertisement for China.

It is decidedly shocking and I don't want to seem blase but it is very typical of how things go -- at least on paper around here.

The reality of it tends to be quite different, Chinese-style, and I work with a very integrated team of foreign teachers.

Work arounds, Jeff, work arounds. You should know that by now.

HFG

But still...

To see it in print...

Reminds me of those signs I saw as a kid that said "No Coloreds" Or "Whites only" or "Jews Forbidden..."

That stuff still shocks me so to see it from a Shanghai "Top" recruiter - just makes me shake my head...

Aside from the racial boundaries, I'm curious what the other "bounderies" are. "Positions available only for whites who want to live in relative poverty"(i.e. 7000RMB a month in Shanghai) might be one. Others?

I don't think I'd want any 'bounderies' at my job other than the ones I set for myself.

It's quite possible that this agency is racist against whites. Maybe all the other positions pay 15,000 per month, but are not available to whites.

This whites-only policy is not restricted to the Mainland alone, Taiwan is just as bad.

I am so happy I won't have to put up with racist crap any more after June!

Saw a great program today about a Chinese village family that had taken in a black baby - they found the baby abandoned (so a bit of it must be Chinese but it was hard to tell). Now the kid has reached school age - the authorities wanted to take him into a home since he wasn't officially adopted!!! It was touching to see the grandfather first explaining how it was only right they treated the kid equally with their natural grandson - and then crying at the thought of the child being placed in a home. (I'm pretty sure after the TV that wont happen.)
So anyways - maybe a small chink of light at the end of the tunnel!!!!!!

I think there are quite a few chinks of light. Most of the prejudice, as in almost any other part of the world, stems from ignorance, negative stereotyping and lack of contact. The university I worked for in China did employ black Americans, Africans, Indians, and even an Arab (who, incidentally, hold similar views on skin colour). Most of them, by virtue of their personalties, were well-liked by the students they taught and seemed to have no problem making Chinese friends.

I have recently come to the end of a stint in a senior management position with a private university in another Asian country. The prejudices against 'people of colour' are just as entrenched here as they are on the Chinese mainland (ironic actually, as a sizable proportion of the local populace are much darker than the Asian norm, due to earlier contact with India). I had to engage in mortal combat to overcome the prevailing attitudes that "we cannot employ Indian/African/black teachers because our students don't like being taught by them" and insist that faculty should be appointed solely on the merits of their qualifications, experience, and ability to do the job.

So me and ScooterBabe walked into a Muslim restaurant. We sat down and ordered and a large Black man - African - sat down and walked up to the large picture menu and ordered his food.

Our food came and others came in the restaurant. His food never came.

When he complained they just looked at him. He got up and left after about 20 minuites of no food...

Racisim in China? No, never...

On the other hand, racism could be born from a familiarity.
Such as the familiarity of a bad customer.
Any establishment has the right to refuse service to anyone.

If you want to see another example of "whites only" take a look at www.anesl.com
A job is being advertised there at several places for a salary of 8000 RMB per month, and it is clearly stated that only white people need apply. I thought this website was something to do with SAFEA which was why I was surprised to see it stated so clearly. Are there rules in this country about racial discrimination? For the students who manage to get to an overseas university will they be surprised or shocked to find that their teacher, professor, or even head of department is not a white person? If so, their surprise. and the racism, will be something that was taught to them in their own country.

Heck, I'm surprised they didn't add "must be young and attractive" as they do in many newspaper ads for administrative help.

My question here is: Where do you draw the line? Can a person of mixed race apply? What constitutes white? Someone who's 50-50 black-white? One quarter black? One eighth? I guess I should go home. I'm 1/256 Native American!
