The companies/schools I work for pay me between 35-45 euro an hour. I haven't tried offering private lessons myself, but I believe I would charge atleast 40euro for 90 minutes.

I am living in Berlin, and I am just starting to do private lessons. For private lessons I am charging 35 Euros for a 1-hour class, and 60 Euros for a two-hour class. So far, I have been rejected by two people for being too expensive, and accepted by one business lady.
It beats my 15 Euros per hour at the schools I am working at! |

Is that because there are so many other native speakers/competition in Berlin? |

I think it is because it is far too expensive that he got rejected . . .
The average school pays 26-30 euros for a 90 minute class . . . the whole idea of going private is that both the student and the teacher benefit financially - the student by saving money, the teaching by earning more . . . imo more than 40 euros for 90 minutes is a rip off (at least in Berlin, which is a cheap city) |

Out of interest, I'd love to know what the average private language school charges the student for a one-to-one lesson for 90 minutes. Any idea? 40, 50, 60 euros? |

I don't think it is too expensive at all. I have a MA and a TESOL Certificate, and tons of experience doing Business English, Academic English, and General Adult English. Plus, I am exceedingly charming, good-looking, and witty.
When I do private lessons, I charge 35 Euros per hour, for a whole hour (60 min) and 60 for a full two hours (120 minutes).
I once saw my school's invoice sheet for a private Business English student. My school charges 70 Euros for a 'two-hour' (90 minute) one-on-one lesson, and pays me 30 of it.
Therefore, I am charging the student less, for more time, and I get to keep all the money. |

If it's a whole hour then it's not so bad, I agree.

Wow. That's a huge differene, but good to know. Can I ask if the school you were at was a 'posh' one (Bristish Council, Wall Street) or just a standard language school? |

Not posh at all... It is a real Mom & Pop shop (literally) and the owners only have about 6 teachers total...
I would really wonder what the 'big ones' like Berlitz charge - or the ones that do mainly Business English and cater to big, rich companies? |
