|
|
Can you help me out? I am researching the kind of materials used for EFL in Pakistan, Malaysia and also, Saudi Arabia. In Saudi Arabia- I have all the book titles I need for the girls' colleges, female university departments and language schools for girls' side, I know what they are doing in the main. When it comes to the male side, this is another matter. {it's a kind of no go area} Admin either put me on the hold line, or when they hear it is me, slam down the phone. So I am asking the esteemed teachers themselves- what books you are teaching, just titles, as I can find out type of books myself and I am not asking for more and more work from your side.
So if any of you ready to be my knight on shining armor and help me with this, then I shall be very grateful for any kind assistance. I am thanking you all in advance. |

Here is a list of course text books I am using this 2nd term (8 weeks).
I teach at a government college for Saudi men in Riyadh.
Advanced Reading: Business Concepts for English Practice by
Mc Dougal Arden & Tolley Dowling
Elementary Writing: Keep Writing 2, Activity Course for Arab Students, Book2 by Richard Harrison
Preparatory Oral: Side by Side, Book 1 by Molinsky & Bliss
Intermediate Oral: Side by Side, Book 2 by Molinsky & Bliss
also use 'in house' material for presentations.
Hope this helps... |

In Yanbu, we're using English Knowhow for the prep year at both campuses and others used are Market Leader (ESP) and North Star, Writer's at Work series to name a few. Also, Keep Writing is used as a supplement in the prep year. |

In various institutions and locations around Saudi I've used
International Express
Market Leader
Tech Talk
Keep Writing 1 / 2 (mentioned above)
Headway (aaagghhh)
plus a number of in-house and locally/company-produced books and materials.
Hope that's of some little help. |

Hi all, thanks for all the feedback. The book titles, I am following it all up, there's seems a lot of variation in what is actually being done in the male schools. Anyhow, I have these titles and I am most grateful. Truly, thanking you once more for your time! Bye bye! |

At KFUPM we used in-house materials, and are going back to using a newer version. In the interim we used "Skills in English" by Garnett publishing.
You will find Interactions is common in Saudi. There is also another textbook which is used for company classes, but I don't have the name.
JIC uses Aramco material and Betty Azar.
I have used Headway quite often in company classes.
It is also quite common for Saudi companies to develop material inhouse that turns out to have been plagiarized (with name changes from Mike to Mohammad and Andrew to Abdullah) from standard western textbooks. I have come across two cases of this, one of which was a fairly clever plagiarization of Streamline. |

The plagiarization of text books and scientific papers in all fields is very common in the Middle East and Egypt.
So, Stephen, how do you feel teaching English from a plagiarized text books? Did you report the case to your managers? And what was their reaction?
Or may be the whole system is corrupted in this regard! |
