If they are the same student portfolio we have here-well, we have to have based on CEF but it's far from reality- they are folders where students keep their sample works and can show them to whoever wants to see- teachers, parents, interviewers, etc. Teacher folders are the same idea; say, you fall ill and a deputy teacher can substitute you by taking the material from your file and contunuing instead of you without extra worry. |

No. What I heard about was a portfolio of voice recordings, compositions etc, to compare and monitor the student's progress, but I don't know exactly how it works in practice. |

I use portfolios only for projects. For example, if my students are to write a Wikipedia article, they must keep copies of all drafts and contacts with other Wikipedians in relation to that article. (Cuts down on plaguarism quite a bit)
This semester Im teaching teachers at my school who have not yet reached 600 despite all the other classes. In this case, they are graded soley on a mega-portfolio they will put together over the course of the semester. Most of the work is related to Wikipedia, but they will do some cultural analysis (principally of a movie) and reflections on a couple of professional articles in their field. Im doing this because, believe it or not, I have to show these guys that improvement in their English (and consequently their TOEFL score, is related to DOING something other than sitting like a log in class.
However, the idea of a "portfolio" of homework that is already graded, to me, is a waste of time and effort. |

Thanks for the links, MELEE. The first one is particularly useful, as I'm thinking of introducing them into my company as a tool to give confidence to clients that their employees are actually getting something worthwhile from their investment. |
