I only applied for my Criminal Background Check last week. I am therefore, very very uncertain on how much time I still need to get through the visa process in order to state my date of availability when applying for schools. I need to bear in mind I need about 2-3 weeks once receiving my visa for personal issues in my home country before leaving. I would hope to go by 1 April at the latest, however my documents are taking time to get processed. Would it be possible to sort out my visa and accept a job while still allowing me a few weeks at home before leaving? Is the beginning of April a bit too hopeful? It is really important I have enough time before leaving.

Any advice on my time confusion problem will be greatly appreciated.

Where are you going?

Some places like China REQUIRE you to enter on a work visa, others, likw Peru will process it there.

For some countries you can't just apply for a work visa. You would need an employer to sponsor you first. As naturegirl wrote, where are you planning to work?

It sounds like you're doing things that are typically done after you get a job offer before you've started looking for jobs. And depending on where you're going, you might not need them at all. I've never done a background check (at least, not to my knowledge... maybe some schools have done them on me, but since there was no effort or bureaucratic hassle to me I don't really care).

Job ads very often include their ideal or required start date, so when you apply you will know how long you have to settle affairs at home. And if, hypothetically, there is an immediate vacancy--like, they want you on the next plane out--let them stress out about getting you your visa! A good school will at the very least help you through the bureaucracy, if not do it all for you.
