I believe I will be living in San Pedro. Does anyone have any advice about this area? From what I understand, it is lively.
Thanks,

Lots of people, some crime though nothing serious as far as I know. I like San Pedro. Depends on where in San Pedro you'll live, though - like, the area around SP Mall is pretty damn different from the area around UCR. |

Better than the mall, I guess. Lots of people around, at least during the weekends. Don't go out alone after sunset (especially in the weekends) if you're a woman, at least not in the beginning until you know the area pretty well.
To forestall any panic, it's not superdangerous or anything, but err on the side of caution. For instance, the area behind Outlet Mall is supposedly pretty bad, but just a few blocks away it's no problem, according to the natives I've talked to. But hey, I never lived there and I'm just going by hearsay.

Thanks for the advice. I grew up in New York City so I'm sure its the same common sense. You can usually tell a bad area from a good one easily. |

Yes, it's a lot about common sense. Keep in mind that if you're obviously gringa, that'll make you more a target. |
