My handle on this info stems from all those posts we used to have in the past, which defended EF schools because they had FT DOS's - a foreigner in a managerial position who could be that link to the the local management. The DOS was also noted as a person who aided new teachers in their training and eased them into this difficult and demanding work environment. Most people used to admit that in EF the FT was underpaid and overworked - but at least because of the guiding hand of an FT DOS - EF could be seen as stable starting point until you could find something better. But now I think we can assume from TESOL's very carefully worded post - that the FT DOS may be a thing of the past - and working in an EF center could now be a very different proposition!!!!!
Some of those FT DOS's may well have been yes men - but now it looks like they have been exterminated to nothing men. As a foreigner employed in the new EF - it looks like you may now have very little say or influence in the workings of your school. And as for a career in EF China - jumping up the ranks - well that also looks a thing of the past  |

Most foreigners employed in my home country have very little say or influence with the workings of their new employer. In fact, it seems courts have held pretty much to the notion that management has the absolute right to magage as they will as long as within the law. That applies to foreign and domestic hires.
I really didn't think things would be too different here.
As for a Chinese DoS; well, I don't care about the color of a persons skin so much as the content of their charactor.
If they are qualified, why would we deny them the job based on nationality? And I have met a few Chinese who absolutely would be terrific DoS' given the opportunity.

My point is - the defenders of EF always made that point that this company differed from the rest because of those FT DOS's (they were always pictured as a haven of fair play if the big bad boss started to overstep the mark).
Now - if they're doing away with the FT DOS - it looks like EF are now much the same as the rest. FT's as shop-floor workers producing a product - without much of say in how they should do it. Yes you're right - the typical lot of a migrant worker  |

Back in the mid-60s there was BLACK LIKE ME a book...and later the movie...about a white journalist who was quite curious about just what it's like to be BLACK in the segregated/racist South...so he disguised himself as a BLACK...and traveled thru the South...and was almost murdered...twice...
For us FTs-in-China, we're having a valuable experience...of what it's like for many folks in the 3rd World...and...a forerunner/bladerunner future-shock experience...for folks in Corporate States. |

stirrin' this thread right into the core of it, i'd say that any chinese academic leaders in this lovely operation will prove how this franchise functions...not long ago, they advertized that EF centers had native speakers of english with all their qualifications..some centers actually carried the names of teachers (with pics in some cases) in front of centers to attract, to deceive since many centers had former postmen, pizza delivery or even former prisoners teaching...one of the academic management requirements was that the individual, a qualified one from an English speaking country and that's how centers were advertised as well..HAS THAT CHANGED 
stirrin' this further, i'd say that the macdonalds (for some reason) was brought in as an examplary advertising tool then .. the only service the centers provided macdonalds like was the look when you opened an EF center's door and you could see THE SAME KINDA FURNITURE in almost every center
stirring this even further, i'd say that not only their marketing strategies but also their employees, blended or "unblended" learning styles, structure, centers' management and their approach have been changing a way too often..is anyone to tell me that THE EF CENTERS AND THEIR HEADLESS OFFICE ARE ANY BETTER AND MORE UNIFORMED THAN BEFORE 
Supporting this organization is just like donating to osama's cave office that needs a laundry machine

Of course, I'm still thanking the guys on the forum! Any informations on how EF works/has worked/may worked are always interesting.
The thing is that I have already signed for it and now I can only try to make the most out of, well, i don't even know which word I could safely use here!!
So as stirring goes, keep up the good work but at the same time, I still would like to hear about the centers I mentioned in my 1st post.
Anybody out there? |
