How hard do you think it is to earn 15,000 per month? My wife said we would need at least that much, plus an apartment provided, if we wanted to move back to China.

In Beijing/Shanghai, if you have 2+ years experience and some kind of TEFL qualification, don't mind teaching kids from rich families at language mills - easy! There have been other threads on this topic recently, so a quick browse might be worthwhile.

What percentage of that is going to her family? You can easily get by on less than 5000 per month.

Going to her family, essentially none. She just thinks it would be a face-losing proposition for her to move back to China, having married an American and left, and live like a pauper. So she wants to be able to live decently enough, and also save for the future.

If its a "keep up with the Joneses" scenario - wanting to seem well off in front of the new breed Chinese middle class - then in any major city 15,000/month aint going to take you far!!!!!!!!!!!!
The middle class here own cars - but not any car, since those with Chinese brand names are rather looked down upon. They have cashed in on the property boom - which make the earnings of the FT game look a joke. They also get a kick in finding foreigners who can't keep up with their spending performances - the nationalistic pride of being part of the new China rich. And by the way none of them ever really work - they sit in offices while their lackies do all the grunting. In fact they rather look down on folk like us who actually do something

Yes face has a lot to do with that kind of life - and being an ordinary FT will get you no where Idea

Well, 15000 a month is not unreasonable, but you are only going to get this figure in the larger cities like Shanghai, Guangzhou and Beijing. Also, don't expect to get this salary from the get-off. It will take a few years of living in-country and making contacts.

Most public schools in China will only go up to about 7000 for a teacher. Language schools will go a little higher but here you have the evening/weekend/holiday hours which after a while will get to you. You might want to try applying to the various international schools, located in and around the larger cities. Here you get the decent hours and the higher salary but this is a real teaching gig and not just some white clown burning hours in front of a classroom.

In that case, nothing would be enough, because she will always be discontent comparing herself to someone who appears to have more

Living like a pauper??? Many CHinese do that. They make less then 5,000 a year, much less a month

So i think the real question is what your wife feels she needs to have to be content. Million RMB apartment? Cars? Expensive restaurant every nite? Saving for a retirement in America? Then you can decide how much is enough

My wife can not work. I make about 5,000, have paid for her surgeries, and still have saved a little, while living comfortably. But then I have no desire to have a car in China, because it is pretty meaningless for most people other then the face it appears perhaps the wife is worried about

OP, why don't you try something other than teaching if the money is such as concern?

Easily?
Doesn't sound like much of a life to me.

It's easy, but it's a well-kept secret.

I make about 14k a month, all included.

She would just want a decent apartment or house, but doesn't have to be a mansion or anything. Probably no car, because it's too dangerous and not necessary, and a waste of money in my opinion. Enough to go shopping when she wants but not like Paris Hilton. Enough to save for a retirement somewhere, wherever it may be.

Like what?

Do you exist entirely on the 5k a month, or have other income or savings from back home?

Don't you need to be a certified teacher for international school work?

Aren't you doing this right now???? If this is all you want why come to China??? After all from your first post it sounds like going back to China is more your own idea rather than your wife's!!!!!!

I get about that in total without that much effort.

Vikuk is right though - it's not actually a very good salary for the wealthy of China.
