If you wear athletic shoes --- be sure they're not the shoes that were recently banned (apparently, the tread pattern found on some confiscated shoes in Al Ain resembles Arabic calligraphy ---- and you don't want to know what the tread appears to say).
Khaleej Times has the entire story.

This little tale comes around few years. Just like the Christians who can see Jesus or Mary in their toast or in a knothole in a tree... you have Muslims who can see words in a squiggle of lines on the bottoms of shoes or the arrangements of seeds in a fruit. The maker of the cast for the shoe bottoms somewhere in China is hardly likely to know Arabic...
You're probably right kiefer. (watch out for the chewing gum...)

Ladies,
thanks for all the links about sandals - it really gives me hope - my feet have so many broken bones in them from childhood when I was stepped on by horses a lot - (!) - now that I'm older my knees are giving out also - sandals are something I long to wear but as stated, have difficulty walking or standing in for long periods because of their design.
I came back to this thread and was amazed to see all the different sandals out there - !
