A former colleague of mine was refused her FEC because she had just turned 70. Does anyone know if she was being told the truth?

I heard the new limit was 65 but I'm not 100% sure.

Four years ago, I worked with a 72 y.o. American man whose F.E.C. / F.R.P. was renewed for a second year.

I spoke directly with a Pakistan man whose F.R.P. renewal was declined here in Guangzhou because he wasn't a native speaker of English. He moved to another province and got an F.E.C. and F.R.P, without hassle.

There are 5 applicable answers for almost every 'China' question. The correct answer depends on the province, the city and, probably, the time of day!

I met a 62-year-old in Seoul a few years ago... teaching ... out of necessity.

That made me think very deeply about my future.

Weird. If you tell people back home you're going to Korea, 40% of the time, their eyes will bug out and they'll imagine Kim Jong Il. So, I'd always have to clarify with something like "Uh, no, I'm going to South Korea. "

There is a seldom enforced ... "guideline" about age. there are the words "must be physically capable", fit, whatever the translation used. So it does make a good excuse if the school is looking for an excuse, Chinese have a mandatory retirement age for Chinese teachers

I am 58, and teach at a reputable public university in Beijing. Three of my foreign colleagues at this university are older than me - and one is 70. All of us have a valid FEC issued in Beijing.

The main expectation seems to be that you are in good health and able to climb up to 6 flights of stairs to apartments and classrooms.

However, this is China, so the rules and regulations concerning employment requirements and the procedures for obtaining visas change frequently.

I note that there is a new detailed visa application form now posted on many Chinese Embassy websites abroad. The form contains a comprehensive list of fairly intrusive questions - unlike the previous very brief and simple visa application form. The new application form is required to be completed for all types of visa. It became effective in late August 2007.
