I am looking to complete my CELTA in Edinburgh and I had some questions concerning their visa system. Most notably, does he CELTA qualify under the Fresh Start scheme? Secondly, should one apply for a student visa when taking the CELTA courses.

I have attempted to contact both home office and the local UK offices here in the States, but apart from some information concerning the new biometric tests required for foreign applicants neither have offered a viable answer. Any assistance would be most appareciated as I am green in these pursuits.

Many thanks...

Scotland is part of the UK.

Check out these two websites which may help you, though a lot will depend if you are a student under the age of 26, and have an International Student Identity Card.

Uncle Scott, I smell an independence 'flavour' for Scotland from your part! Laughing
Do you think Scotland will get independence under his 'majesty' the king Alex Salmond? Laughing

Personally, I do not think so, Scotland will stay under her Majesty the Queen, and be part of the UK for at least 20 years!! Then may be things will change, and the majority of the Scottish will vote for devolution not independence!

For the OP, to go and study in Scotland you need to apply for an Entry Visa from her majestys British embassy in USA, and all your 10 fingers and your face have to be scanned and stored for biometric information! For addional information check with the visa section of the British embassy in US.

They have devolution already, having voted for it in a referendum in September 1997.

Being American, I'm not qualified to discuss the nuances of Scottish independence, but I am am cogntive enough to know where it is without referencing a map.

Still, my question remains, does the CELTA qualify under the Fresh Talent scheme. According to guidelines it is for any HND or higher, but no one has been able to answer whether the CELTA is equivalent to an HND according to educational stndards.

Any thoughts...?

I've checked the Fresh Talent Initiative in Scotland scheme with colleagues from Scottish universities.

This scheme permits non-EU foreign national students to work and live in Scotland without the need for a work permit. However, this programme only allows foreign national students who have graduated at degree level from an accredited college or university in Scotland, to apply within one year of completing their studies, for an unrestricted, 2 year authorization as a Fresh Talent worker.

I'm not sure whether you have graduated in Scotland, and it would appear that the CELTA is not classed as " degree" level. You would, therefore, have to apply for a visa.

Here are a few useful websites:
<www.talentscotland.com>
<www.scotlandistheplace.com>
<www.careers-scotland.org.uk>

I hope this helps - good luck!

CELTA is a level 4 qualification, the same as an HND.

Whether or not that means it qualifies for the Fresh Talent Scheme is another story (I have no idea of).
