Nice to have a Monday off, but I miss the old 'puentes'. A few years ago, when such a holiday fell on a Tuesday, it was common to have both the Monday and the Tuesday off. Modernization I suppose...

In any case, enjoy the day. Mexico City has been quiet all weekend.

Lose the weekend? Weekends are three days in Mexico! Friday is a complete write-off in any city, anywhere. Ever had a productive class on a Friday?

Some years ago in the U.S. almost all holidays were changed to Mondays (except for certain ones like July 4th and Thanksgiving) so as to give people a three-day weekend, puentes being an unknown luxury there. It looks like the Mexican government, in an attempt to "modernize" life here, has decided to institute this gringo system of scheduling holidays on Mondays. So you could blame Uncle Sam for this loss of a wonderful Mexican custom. By the way, when I was living in Spain last year, I noticed that the puente custom was still alive and kicking.

It's actually meant to try and increase productivity. The idea is to try to do away with the 4 and 5 day weekends which seemed to accompany any stat holiday. Increase productivity? Well, let's see.

March should be interesting for productivity! Semana Santa has its usual Thursday & Friday of holiday, but Benito Jurez' Birthday falls on one of these 2 days and has been moved to the previous Monday, leaving only 2 working days. Effectively a 9 day puente, or 10 if you follow TLWH's reasoning!

Monday the 25th? My work calendar doesnt show it as a day off, although the week prior is listed. This is a mandatory holiday, no?

The commemoration of Benito Jurez Day has been moved back to Mon., March 17.

Revolution Day has been shifted, too, apparently. Here's what I found on a government website (notice how they don't name the religious holidays):

Quote:

Damnit! How sneaky. And here I had my hopes up for a little longer vacation. Thanks for the listing!

Not me I love the change.
My institution always made us work the previous Saturday in exchange for the non-holiday day of the puente. So no 4 day weekends, but no Saturdays. I like it better this way!

We get Monday, March 24th Off because the 17th falls during Semana Santa, which we have off anyway, so the the 24th is off instead of the 21st--since this year that's both Benito's Birthday and Good Friday.

But I'm taking a half sabbatical, so I'll have all of March (and the following 5 months) off. Razz

With BJ Day being celebrated on the 17th, we can also celebrate St. Patrick's Day with a pint of Guinness! Very Happy ... Oh! and my parents' 57th wedding anniversary.
