Nick,
You could go to the Uk. Apply for a British passport and you can stay forever.
The pay will NOT be triple/double or even equal to what you are getting now. This is because you will not get a job teaching in the UK.
The best possiblity for you there would be bar work.
I think you are REALLY lucky that you have the job you have and you should hold onto it because you are unlikely to get another.
The possiblilities for people with no life experience, limited education and no interest in self improvement are in short supply everywhere. |

Hello,
I am an Australian aged 20 currently working in China.
In a nutshell, the pay is low, I am bored - am not having a good time. Would love to live and work in the UK.
I have friends and family there (my parents are English) the pay would be ATLEAST double-triple+ what I'm earning now.
My only concern is my age, lack of teaching experience (2 months) and my lack of degree.
Having said that I am a high school graduate with a TESOL certificate and with work experience as an IELTS teacher. (IELTS/TOEFL was my elective in my TESOL course by the way)
I enjoy teaching, and ideally would like to continue teaching IELTS prep.
Any advice??? All help is really appreciated! (as I'm thinking the sooner I leave south-east China the better...) |
And do you know how much less far your pay will go in the UK? Have you found out how much things cost in the Uk compared with China?
At least if you have family there that will make it a bit easier, I guess. But forget being able to rent your own place (like you get for free in China) off a TEFL salary in the UK. No way sirree. |

I think the best you could hope to find at age 20, with no qualifications, but a little experience, might be to try for summer work as an activity teacher/organiser on a course for teenagers.
Look at the many websites advertising short summer programmes for Italian/Spanish/Russian teenagers and you will see they need help (but not teaching in the classroom). They provide accommodation and meals.
Otherwise, you could try for a classroom assistant's post (they are in great demand) but will need to get CRB clearance to work with children.
With British parents, I think you should be able to get a British passport...check it out. |

I'm Australian, my Dad's English and I have a British passport. The form's a bitch (old birth, marriage certificates etc.) but it isn't a problem. You could then work in the EU and some countries might overlook the fact that you don't have a degree (that is if teaching's really what you want to do). |

It looks that so far nobody wants try and give you something positive here, Of which I'm amazed.
You have family here, your parents are British so why don't you go to the British Embassy and get a visa. With your status it shouldn't be a problem.
Also, if your TESOL qualification is equivelent to a Celta or Trinity you will have no problem in getting a job in the UK. If it isn,t then it should be worthwhile taking one of those courses before you start. Most of the employers don't demand a degree, often because they can't afford that status in regards in what they can afford to pay in wages.
Check up vacancies in tefl.com and look at what qualifications they are asking in their advert. And check up their income offers as well.
I'm amazed that you went to China without a proper work package contract where you would have had at least your return flight, or for some reason you wish to leave before your contract is complete?? |

His parents are English, he has the right to work with perhaps going though a few formalities maybe. If he can live with family or friends he might be better off than China. Or he has the option of looking for other better paid jobs that he cant get in China. His advantage is that English is his first language, where it is not in China. His life will be much more flexible in the UK.

Well, I did point out he'd probably earn more doing bar/cleaning work!
I think the responses were partly due to the naivety of the initial post - "earn 2/3 times in London" - than any wish to dissuade. |

I can't speak for other schools in the UK, but one London school paying the princely sum of 11 an hour is only taking graduates with a good TEFL qualification. Other schools may be more accommodating about qualifications, but their hourly pay rate is likely to be lower than bar-work, as suggested by previous contributors. Maybe administrative work would be better paid. |
