I know that Nova makes men take out their piercings when teaching but in your free time you are allowed to wear what you want. I would not wear them to the interview(goes without saying)
It is about the same as tatoos...don't show it at work.
And there are no stupid questions...just stupid people who never ask questions and therefore remain ignorant. (imho) |

One of my former JET colleagues was hastled at her school because she had a nose piercing, something that is part of her cultural background (she's from a Pakistani-Canadian family). The school board didn't mind it, but the school she was assigned to told her to not wear it at school. Despite her protests that it is an aspect of her culture and a beauty mark, they resisted her.
My school board thought it was charming when I showed up at the airport with my feet hennahed. My girlfriends had drawn good luck charms all over my feet, up to the ankles, as a going away present. The school board reps thought it was a lovely idea, and it was a conversation point for the three weeks it took to fade. |

JUst goes to show that JET really does vary from school to school...I had a small stud in my nose while I was a JET, and, while it did cause a mild sensation, my supervisor never commented on it or asked me to take it out. When I finished teaching that year I had two eyebrow piercings done -- I wasn't teaching any more but still had to go to the end of term ceremony. Agan, no-one commented (tho' possibly out of politeness or shock!.
Off topic -- but always made me laugh: my students were fascinated with my nose stud. But they didn't know the word 'piercing', so in every class during the 'let's ask our new teacher a question' session, I got something like 'Laura-sensei, how many holes have you?' I did manage not to laugh as I wrote 'piercings' up on the board, but of course never told them what 'holes' can imply in our filthy English-speaking minds.

Smaller schools/companies might have their own rules. One guy at my old school had an earring. |

I have 9 piercing in my ears and some of the kids have stared and when I started I had SUPER short hair. I was warned by some teachers in other schools that I may be required to take them out. (AS IF!!) But so far, no one has said boo.
And on picnic day, the kiddlets saw my tatoo. Again, either out of politness or fear of the new teacher, no one said anything.
as for the holes/piercings mixup....that would send me into fits!!! |
