I just came back from the immi office. They said you can abolutely get a visa to stay in Taiwan if your spouse is working here with a work permit and ARC as well. You just need to get a different visa.

She (the immigration officer) said that even if you got fired from your job on your own ARC/work permit and had those cancelled, you could easily get the new "dependant" visa within the 10 day time frame you would otherwise have to leave Taiwan...

She didnt mention getting a marriage certificate translated, but i guess that is probably true... and you do need to do it in the Taipei offic.

So, this is some good info for people who are married and coming to Taiwan to teach English together.

2) You get black-listed by your school, and the gov't will no longer issue a work permit to you. Therefore you have no real choice but to leave.

More than likely the first scenario plays out, because it has been said that #2 is nothing more than urban legend, but I believe it to be true. I dunno...I like conspiracy theories.

It is not urban legend. You have 10 days to leave the occupied territory of Taiwan after your ARC is canceled or you will be barred from re-entry for five years.
What happens is that your employer will tell you that they will not cancel our ARC but in fact they canceled it as soon as you gave them notice. Thus you have over stayed before you even quit your job.
Don't give notice if you are going to break your contract, just do it at a time when you are going to lose the least amount of pay. It comes off a lot better for you in the end. We, as minority residents on occupied Taiwan are forced to work and live within certain rules mandated by the a racist and corrupt occupational government on Taiwan. The odds are stacked against you unless you know how to play the game. Even then there is no rule of law on Taiwan, only the rule of the most corrupt (otherwise known as the Taiwanese way of doing things).
After you quit your job go down to the visa office with your termination letter in hand and apply for an extension. Fill out the application form and sign it. You are eligible for up to 4 months. If you have any problems call the European Chamber of Commerce and request the documnts to show the immigration office requiring them to give you an extension.
The occupational govenment is so corrupt on Taiwan that the national government no longer allows locals immigration offices to cancel or issue ARCs or black list people. That means your employer has little influence over the process excpt for control over when the ten days start. File for an extension immediatly.

Not likely, unless she is a Taiwanese citizen

There is no such thing as Taiwanese citizenship, there is Chinese citizen ship in the ROC (Republic of Corruption) and all others ore foreigners. According to the laws of the occupational government on Taiwan "Taiwanese" does not exist.

You have ten days to get it done from the time your employer canceled your ARC. You only have your employers word on when that was so assume the worst and immediatly apply for an extension before the corrupt and racist systen on Taiwan works against you .

Good luck!
