Well, the visa issue has never been of much concern to me since I'm working sort of under the table anyway with my employer. I've heard that my protection here is paid for by the company that owns the school. Not sure how true that is...
Are the police here so bored that they'll investigate my visa status because they find a flyer somewhere advertising English lessons? I guess there is plenty of testimony out there of yesses and nos, both of which I'd like to see. I guess the "I was just trying to help the community" defense won't get me very far if they come knocking.
Also, I guess I should ask, what are the penalties one can expect for private tutoring to small groups on a business visa? Or even tutoring one student? My silly American way of thinking makes it difficult for me to understand why anyone (local authorities) would care, or even notice. Maybe I haven't been here long enough...
Some very good points have been made in the previous posts. Keep them coming, they're much appreciated! |

What about if you had a Chinese wife who had guanxi and a brother in law with the money and even more guanxi.
But would it be worth the hassle? |

Police here are like police anywhere..it usually takes a complaint by a neighbor to instigate n investigation. |

i appreciate your points of views on and i understand what samhouston's sayin' ..but respectfully aren't we a bit away from the topic on...cj, you really love bikin' away, although i know that you sometimes come back
getting a permit to stay in this lovely country is rather interesting, if you get married..i mean if you want to stay it doesn't matter you're married to a chinese much...some that've married might've got that idea of startin'up somethin' in order to get their status smoother in here
now, have you guys heard of any foreigner owning or running a language center in china???
or, have you actually thought about doin'it yourself here???
cheers and beers to all hard working FTs that've been around |

Hassle is the word!!!! A lot of your of your effort needs to be focused on marketing - and you need reliable staff for that.
If you had real gaunxi - and could really get the licences - then getting that school is not just about classrooms and schoolbooks but also getting staff who're willing to use some initiative (just 2 or 3 helpers who have their heart in the project - and can help with the face to face tasks concerning students/officials). You cant do this kind of project as a one man show - and getting reliable workers here can be quite a hassle!!!! |

| We've all sat there and thought "I could make sooooooo much money out of this game". Sadly the reality is that it simply isn't that easy... |

| i've known a few people who've opened their own business here, some foreigners, some chinese, some english schools, some not. i don't know any foreigners who have been able to open their own schools without a local business partner. and most businesses in general seem to require a local partner, but not all. i knew one lady here who was teaching english and told me she wanted to open her own school so she "didn't have to work"--an odd proclamation, i thought, but i guess she meant work for somebody else. anyway, she did get something started, but i don't know how it's going. in any case running this kind of thing is plenty of hard work--just of a different nature from teaching english. maybe a faster way toward the fat cash, maybe not. probably depends a lot on your business savvy. |

| last summer I embarked on a Cartoon English Classes...and although bank was made..next few months the Chinese Art teachers from two schools who were familiar with the idea started their own class..being able to rent cheaper accomodations and taking on students for 30 RMB per hour, I decided that education did not pay as well as motorcycle parts, so I just completed a move to a new shop, and it ain't offering English or Art classes. |
