I attempted to get the views of a class of Turkish beginners but they were too caught up in understanding (or lack of) to think about just sounds. BTW they were divided 50/50 on ease of understanding British or American speakers.
As far as other languages go, where they weren't even contemplating understanding, they liked French, Italian and Greek; they disliked German because it sounded "hard".
Some years ago I was travelling on a long distance bus in turkey when 2 Australian backpackers got on. They'd just arrived in Turkey and were hearing the buzz of Turkish for the first time. They said that it sounded like British English - the same sounds, rhythm, etc. |
