Hi,

Recently, I have become somewhat dissatisfied with the time and money-intensive classes at UNAM's CEPE. To boil down my criticisms, the new book we're using (which IS the curriculum) spends too much time on the most basic stuff (like adverbs end with -mente; or suffixes like -ito(a)). I'm in the last basic course before intermediate and I've been wanting and expecting: the passive voice, relative pronouns, preterite subjunctive, and more complex grammatical structures. In fact, the mix of skills and substance in the textbook seems very unsystematic and falls short of what I would expect from a university.

Any leads on better values in Spanish classes in D.F.? The reason this has recently come to a head, is that another class was thrown onto my schedule where I work, and I really need the best value for my time and money. With that said, any male (sorry, it's not my rule and I think it's stupid) willing to wear a jacket and tie for four hours a week teaching English to a really nice class of 16 year olds, pleeeeeeeeeze PM me.

Thanks,
Charlie Malarkey[/i]

i also took the UNAM CEPE course, level 3. the book was terrible. the teachers were fine but the school fired one of them in the middle of the session with no explanation. all in all an annoying experience. there are some schools in roma but i don't remember the names.

As a very former Spanish teacher, I would say that the imperfect subjunctive and the other grammar points you mention are usually left till the intermediate level.

Hello. Do you know the 'grammar in use English books'? maybe you've come across them in your English teaching travels.

Well, I have found a book that is the same concept, except purely in Spanish! The advantage of this book is that if you want to study specific grammatical areas, you can just go to that chapter. It also has an answer key in the back so you can check.

The book cant replace classes, but you could self study and then find a private teacher for 1 or 2 hours a week to check and reinforce the studying youve done. Could be cheaper and more enjoyable!

the book is:

Gramtica bsica del estudiante de espaol. various authors, published by Difusin

I know difusin are based in DF, so maybe, if you're interested you could take a look!

Good luck, and I hope this helps

Thanks for the info!

Charlie

PS--I was supposed to be in an Intermediate Level 1 this term (which included those grammatical points I listed), but a curriculum change turned it into Basic 4.

How do you spell 'rip-off?'
