I'll be moving to Yemen soon to live and teach. Does anyone know if $2,500 a month is a good salary for that country? |

Dear lterrys,
Yikes - that's a good salary for teaching even in the USA. And the cost of living there is VERY low.
I didn't know you could make that much in Yemen. You should be able to save a bunch (if you want to.)
Regards,

Shouldn't this be in the General Middle East branch? Maybe the MODs can move it...
There are threads over there on Yemen. Is this AMIDEAST?

With the above salary in Yemen, you will live like a millionaire.
Just avoid the area known as triangle of kidnapping and death which is located about 150kM south-east of the capital Sanaa. |

Considering that Yemenis, no doubt with similar or higher qualifications to yours, get something like the equivalent of $300 a month, what do you think? And IS IT ANY WONDER there's a 'kidnap zone' in Yemen? Ponder the anomalies of international 'aid'! |

This made me laugh out loud.
It's like something on a spoof treasure map devised by Monty Python! |

' And the cost of living there is VERY low. '
John, I don't know when you were last there--- but this is no longer true (if it ever was!). Believe me, the cost of living and supporting a family on the equivalent of $300 a month does NOT make for a comfortable lifestyle! Only expats on soaring salaries (look at the difference!) can afford to see the cost of living as low--- and it's hardly a shock to find that such inequities breed discontent. |

Dear eha,
Um, where did the "$300" a month come from? I don't think this thread is concerned with the standard of living of the "average Yemeni" nor with how much THEY make a month.
The OP mentioned $2,500 a month, which I still contend in an excellent salary for Yemen.
And, while I can certainly sympathize with the unfairness of the disparity between the salaries of ex-pats and those of Yemenis with "similar or higher qualifications", I really don't think that's very relevant to the OP's question.
Regards,
John |

I don't suppose this position is a senior fellowship through Georgetown (funded by the state dept), is it? |

I think not... they pay better than this I believe. Plus, the embassy run language school in Sanaa was transferred to other management.
Of course... one never knows.

The junior fellowships pay around $25,000 for this region (I think) plus accommodation and a living allowance. Senior positions would be more for sure. |

I guess all the Fulbrighters that I knew were in senior positions, as they were always paid much better than I was even though our credentials were pretty equal.

$300 a month--- the figure came from knowing a number of Yemenis with VERY high qualifications and experience, who earn the equivalent of that amount. And if this thread isn't concerned with such discrepancies, well, I'll restrain myself and say only that MAYBE IT OUGHT TO BE. Maybe we ALL ought to be. And in fact, it's VERY relevant to the question, because if anyone thinks that Yemenis are some kind of naive colonial retainers who accept what's imposed on them as the status quo, should a person with as limited a political perspective as that be coming to the region? |
