Canadian TEFL certified English teacher with 2 years exp in 4 countries looking in london.
i have a journalism dip and lots of traveling teaching experience 3 years
i only have cdn passport but no work permit as im planning only a short stint in the uk
in spain and asia its easy to land jobs using loquo dot com a website like gumtree. i ignore ads that demand working papers and end up contacting the ones that dont; avg hourly pay is 13 to 15 pounds this way both in spain and asia mostly at home or in company sessions setup by language centers
id like to find a similar setup in london
possible? |

Yes, but don't expect 13 to 15 pounds an hour for teaching. 11 max average about 8 or 9 especially without papers. Can't you get a BUNAC visa? |

It is advisable to only teach private lessons if you don't have the right papers. The Govt is having a purge at the moment on bogus colleges, and checking employees as well as students.
Any self-respecting language school probably won't touch you without papers. If they do take you on, you will have to pay National Insurance and Tax, and need an National Insurance number. Without these, you and any school could be in serious trouble.
Don't expect any more than the lowest salary scale of about 10 an hour. |

Sounds low.
What about serving in a nice, medium range Meditereeanian restaurant in London. Do they tip in the UK? What kind of hourly net return can I expect serving in London? |

Just looking at the evening newspapers, and the hourly pay for waiters/waitresses seems to be between 5.75 and 7.00 per hour - and that is gross, before tax and insurance have been paid.
Tips are usually paid (unless the restaurant already charges 10% or more service charge) but are usually pooled and shared out amongst the staff. |
