| I'm quite lucky that I make about 11.5k RMB a month (with a schedule easy enough to do extras as well) with 4 months' paid holidays - but how easy is it generally to find that kind of pay *and* that kind of holiday time? usually it's either/or. That's the other thing. A lot of the public schools which pay 4500-5500 simply won't go that far above that kind of level no matter how hard you haggle with them. But they do give lots of paid holidays... On the other hand (and I might be wrong here) those earning in the teens probably aren't getting that much paid holiday time (in general)... |

| I'm surprised it's as much as 30 in Qingdao considering that's where Qingdao beer comes from. Here in Dalian it's usually 10 or occasionally 15 for a bottle of qingdao in a bar. |
30rmb would be new york bar, q-bar, and feeling. i think Jacks bar and the beatles bar were either 20 or 25 last time i was there. i personally would rather just get draft beer from a restaurant for less than 3rmb per half liter (same thing will cost you 50 in first 3 places i mentioned bars). also most bars don't have happy hour in qingdao.
to be honest bars were cheaper back in arizona than they are here. 75 cent bottle of bud if you could drink it or $1 pitchers depending on the night. My favorite bar had $2 pints on tuesdays and they had like 30 differnet kinds on tap new castle, dos equis, boddingtons. |

75 cents for a bottle of bud!!! That's nearly as cheap as the Czech Republic! I can't believe it could be as cheap as that...
In London it typically costs the same for a bottle of bud as for a pint of anything else, so around 45 RMB... The insane thing is that some idiots in the UK think drinking Bud is 'cool' so they pay loads to drink the stuff when there's loads of better stuff on offer for the same price... |

reverse happy hour at casey jones bar and grill in pheonix arizona 10-midnight no cover usually (there was a small cover durring special events wich was fairly rare). but that was a over a year ago, i just checked their website and bottles have about tripled($2.25) and 32oz pitchers have gone up to $1.50(from $1) friday and saturday night used to be thursday too(so those nights it's basically 75 cents a pint). if you know where to go bud and coors is cheaper than bottled water back home.
website:http://www.caseyjonesgrill.com/
check food and drinks then at the bar.

Bottom line:
4,000 RMB is sufficient for Qingdao, but if you plan to eat at expensive restaurants every few days and drink at bars a lot, not to mention doing a lot of unncessary shopping, your money will disappear very quickly.
I'd say 4,000 RMB a month now will get you as far in China now as 3,000 RMB would a few years ago. |

| My recreation bill alone is 2000 at least with most months reaching into the 3k region. |
Mine would have been at least that for much of last year. And I know plenty of types capable of dropping that in a night in Shanghai, but they obviously aren't English teachers, have expence accounts etc.
But 4000 is low, but doable I guess. My job in Dalian in 2001 paid 7000 plus apartment. I used to party pretty hard and still save 4000 a month - mind you I wasn't paying 30 for a beer in those days! I wasn't paying 20 even, I paid 5 for a mug and 8 for a bottle of Qindao (at the much malinged Dave's bar - my favourite place in China). To think I would end up paying 40 and up some six years later in Shanghai - for half the fun I might add. |

Not to hijack the thread - but I am quite depressed at the lack of jobs advertised and the pay - for Chengdu. Would anyone have a clue on what is the minimum I should accept at 15 and 20 hours and hourly pay?
I live fairly well (ok) as a local in Thailand on 4250RMB. The food is great though and very cheap. |
