Would somebody please fill me in? I have only recently developed an interest in teaching in Hong Kong. As I read all these wonderful posts I am hearing lots of stuff about NET, PNET, SNET, etc. Although the information seems to be helpful, I have no idea what these things are. Could somebody please enlighten me?

Hi there,

NET = Native English Teacher
PNET = Primary Native English Teacher
SNET = Secondary Native English Teacher

These terms all refer to the NET scheme run by the Education Bureau. Some schools and language centres advertise 'NET' jobs that aren't actually part of the NET scheme; these usually pay less and don't have the fringe benefits of the NET scheme, so if you're looking at NET jobs, make sure it's the government NET scheme and not just a job for a native English speaker.

If you go to www.edb.gov.hk, you should be able to find some info on the scheme.

Good luck.

Sorry to interupt this thread but I too am planning to come over to HK to teach and have been reading all the posts on this site for information.
Can anyone tell me the prerequisite qualifications to apply for the NET scheme. I know that my timescale is probably all wrong but would be really interested to know if I stood a chance.
TESOL qualified and lecturing within FE at the moment, on top of a human resource managment degree and project management experience.

Any help gratefully received

The ability to actually visit the EdB website in order to discover what they require is a huge plus, and will go a long way towards demonstrating that one has the research skills of a nine year-old, not to mention "project management experience".
