Is it a crime to own money in China? (I *may* owe a C-person money - less than $500 USD - and want to know about possible legal consequences. This circumstance arose from a work-related fallout.)
I'm from the Free World where debtors' jails have closed since Dickens wrote about them; however, I'm not sure about what can happen in China. |

I would be more worried from the person arranging someone to beat you up than legal consequences. The Chinese constantly cheat each other for whatever amount they can. |

Yes, if you signed a contract to that effect, they can dangle it in front of you and give you a hard time, yes.
Common workers here are what we would consider "indebted servants" in the West. They often have to pay a "deposit" to get a job and lose the deposit if they quit or are fired. |

Yea! I'll never pay. I will have to get the consulate involved when I cross that bridge (sigh). |

You mention a debt that is under $500 - looks like quite an international incident brewing up here - I'm sure your consulate is already in contact with special-forces |

Could it be possible the other party might be ok to write off the money knowing that they are rid of you? |

How does one end up owing money to a school in China? Is this a 'breakage of contract' fee thing?
Usually, the unwritten rules stipulate that the FT will merely forego his return airfare and it will be called quits without further ado. |

Again, I will ask:
Did you sign anything that said you would owe them money if you quit early? |

Were you reimbursed your airfare early and then took off? |

Are you a native speaker of English, or are you just functionally illiterate? What does 'half to' mean? Do you mean 'have to'? And by 'your' do you by any chance mean 'you're'? |
