Hi everyone,

I am currently in Costa Rica working in ecotourism and teaching English but I would like to go to Chile at the end of this month and find work as an ESL teacher. I have a university degree, TEFL Certificate and a bit more than 2 years experience. Are there jobs to be found on the internet or would most people recommend that I come to Chile first to find work? I am thinking Santiago since it seems like there would be the most jobs to find there. How much time approx. do you think it will take to find a job? Will I be fine getting a job on a 90 day tourist visa? Are there good and cheap hostels to stay in while I am finding work? Any and all suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!!!!

Hey,

Yeah just do it! There a definitely certain advantages to be had by just going there and getting stuck in. You'll be able to sort out interviews quickly, negotiate salaries, see the schools, meet your DOS/manager and potential pupils.
I had an amazing time living and working in Chile! Beautiful country amazing people, Opportunities to travel gallore! From what I remember most employers don't tend to advertise as they prefer you to be in the country. Finding a job depends how peristent you are and how much you go for it! Theres lots of schools you just have to look for them. There was someone pm'ing a full list of schools on the forum, I dont have that list anymore. You can however check las paginas amarillas, yellow pages and there should be a list of schools to get the ball rolling.

Santiago is also close to Valparaiso and Vina del mar, there only 2 hours away and I would recommend visiting for either a trip or to research teaching posts there. Valpo is funky and a UNESCO world heritage site and Vina is its cleaner much less cooler twin with several schools you can send your cv too.

There's plenty of hostals mentioned in Lonely planet guide to Chile. Depends what you want.

Just thinking about it makes me want to go back.

Thanks for this info I'm actually planning to go to Chile to teach English in the next few months...

For what I've gather, it seems that showing up is the best thing!

I have already found quite a bit of info on various blogs and web sites on the net, but any other advices on the way of doing business in Chile would be great.
