Looking for some feedback and what attire is considered "professional" for the upcoming job fairs. I don't want to drop the cash for a suit I won't wear again. Thoughts? |

Go for a classic plain business suit, and make sure that your clothes are clean and not too much perfume.
If you wear any earings, it would be better if you leave them at home before you go to the interview.
Also, if you have any visible tatoos, just hide or 'purge' them!
Good luck. |

Man...I was really hoping that this was going out of style. |

Dear mishmumkin,
Unfortunately, being uncomfortable never goes out of style.
Regards,

I don't think that a power suit is required for women in ME TEFL. There are plenty of ways for a woman to look professional without wasting the cash for something that you will never wear again.

Remove the nose stud and bone through the nose. Try not to be stoned on arrival. Best to lay off the booze also.
Avoid any hint of 'alternative' lifestyles. |

Excuse me...but is this for real???I find this topic rather absurd, unless you've spent the last 50 years hidden away in a cave somewhere away from society I would think knowing what to wear to an interview is fairly common knowledge. I am asuming since you asked this question you:
A) Have never taught before?
B) Have never held a professional job before?
C) Have spent the last 50 years secluded from society?
D) You are just insecure?
If you selected 'D' then...do a search "what to wear to an interview" and can bet you will find all the info you need. |

I suspect that cmp45 has never been female. Professional male attire has changed little in my lifetime... can't say the same at all for the professional female.
What is proper for a US academic position is very likely not the same as for the Gulf...

VS honestly..anyone that is even remotely aware of the Middle East life style would factor that into what to wear...of course modesty is the fashion here...okay...then do a search what to wear to a job interview in the Middle East...and probably would get equally relevant results... |

I think this applies to the Middle East as everywhere
General tips about what to wear to your interview:
Dont:
Dress too flashy, with too bright colors
Wear too much jewelry
Wear too much cologne/ perfume
Have any visible tattoos (if you do, cover them!)
Wear too much makeup
Have a wild hairstyle
Wear dirty or wrinkled clothing
Have highly visible skin piercings
Do:
Dress with conservative, dark colors
Navy blue, black, or tan work best
Smell freshly clean (shower before interview)
If you do wear makeup, keep it subtle
Have your hair brushed, styled neatly and kept away from your face
If appropriate, make sure shirt is tucked in
Clothing should be clean and neatly pressed (ironed)

We're not talking about common sense things here... all she really asked was whether she needed to buy a suit.
She got the answer... before you entered the thread, but perhaps your list will be useful for others.

The business suit is "out" in many industries and regions w/in the United States. I have worked for 2 large, well-known corporations and was not required nor expected to show up for the interview in a full-on suit. Why? Partially the region in which I live (w. coast), and partially because of the industry.
I taught in the Middle East for over 5 years, so I am perfectly familiar w/ modesty. What I'm not familiar with is the expectation for job fair interviews for jobs in the ME, since all of my previous interviews for jobs in the region were done over the phone/videoconference. How about putting away that forked tongue, CMP? |

Business casual should do the trick. It probably will do no harm to wear a suit , but seems a little overkill to buy one just for the interview. |

OMG since when was expectation so high on the list...I stick by what I say...common sense should show you the way...look in your closet and am sure you could pick out half a dozen decent things to wear ...without having to invest in anything new. More importantly, it's what' you have inside your head and level of confidence that you demonstrate etc. that counts more, but I don't deny that the way you look is important, therefore if you wear to the job fair what you normally wear in the classroom; this would be suitable, no? Assuming you dress well in the classroom.
My forked tongue was just added drama for the fun of it...... |
