Actually La Paz is a good idea for the swimming as well. I cant remember if I mentioned how great the beaches are and they arent touristy like Cabo. There are some tourists but mostly Mexicans with their bbqs and caguamas. There are still bars out at some but there are others without and off road stuff here is amazing. You can also head to the mountains to do a bit of camping. Its swimmable here all year although its gets a bit chilly in the winter I hear....the water that is. The air temp for the winter is something like 17 degrees or warmer.

There is work here, I wouldnt say a ton of work but you can find it and there are some well paying schools like the tec. The people are fantastically friendly too.

Hi! I work here in La Paz as an independent English teacher. There is lots of work giving private classes and in the schools. I only want to work part time so I have had to turn down some students and jobs. I have an FM3 forma independiente and got it without going through the process of apostillado in Canada by taking a 160 hour course at the State University, UABCS. The course was specifically aimed at teaching English to Mexicans, and the certificate was accepted by Inmigracion without question. I believe that the course is still offered in Cabo San Lucas, although it has been discontinued at the university here. Hope this helps.

I should have noticed that Merida was already recommended. I came across another suggestion on the Viva Veracruz forum this week, and have joined Insider Merida forum. I've changed my hair style and forums so many times, I don't know what I look like. Smile

I do not need full time work. I find that I'm lucky to be able to cram 30 hours of teaching into 6 work days per week already.

Hola Guero:
Have skimmed thru your thread, and would sure like to have an update from you on what you've been doing since September last year. Probably others in this forum would too.
Can you give us a critique of your success (or lack of) and adventures in being an independiente?
I'm all ears. Very Happy

Alas, September's high hopes have not materialized. I am still in Thailand!

Moving back from the other end of the earth is no simple decision. I wonder at myself for having made the move here to begin with. I have neither the spare cash nor the time to just fly 11 time zones back and forth to investigate several of the big possibilities.

E.g., just getting my four week TEFL cert apostilled is a three step process that can only be done at 3 govt. agencies 800 km away. Then I would have to 'stop by' Austin to get two more documents apostilled.

Don't hold your breath waiting for news from me in Veracruz or Merida.
