Hey everyone, I'd love to hear some more about Venezuela since it doesn't seem to have gotten much coverage in these forums and I'm very interested in spending some time there. I'm about to graduate from college and am looking to teach English for 1-2 years in 2-3 locations. What are people's experiences in various cities in Venezuela? I'd love to hear about where you went, how difficult or easy it is to find work there, how difficult or easy it is to subsist off a teaching income, how much fun it is (night life and things to do during the day), reputation of the city, and safety. Thanks a lot.

Thanks, that helps a lot. I was also hoping people could help narrow my search by describing a few cities that I could then pick from.

Caracas: big, polluted, expensive, lots of crime, modern.

Maracaibo: mid-sized, scorching hot in the summer, close to Colombia, oil economy, seat of the opposition, on the coast but not much in the way of nice beach areas.

Barquisimiento: IMHO, the best of the provincial cities. Nice plazas, friendly people, fairly well preserved Spanish colonial architecture, mix of the rural and urban.

Merida: Popular backpacker destination. Beautiful mountain locale. People have easygoing vibe.

Posters have reported the region SE of Caracas is quite wonderful, but no experience traveling there. Guidebooks a bit vague and ESL market likely smaller than the rest of the country. Good luck!

Caracas: Dangerous, dirty and extremely expensive.
Maracaibo: Dangerous, dirty, and fairly expensive.

Just the other day in Maracaibo, while walking at 6:15 pm from work, a guy with a knife came up to me wanting money!!

Oh, if this isn't bad enough, every hard toget a working visa now, and almost nowbody will help you get one. Which means, no hosipitals, paid vacations, etc.

And if you do get a work visa, it might not be good enough, some companies are now asking for a residence visa.

And becareful of men on motos, they have robbed me 3 times in this past year.

It sounds like the poster is not very happy in Venezuela, with good reason! However, regarding the above comment, at least in Mexico, even if you're working legally, that doesn't necessarily entitle you to health care (I guess that's what you mean by "hospitals") and paid vacations, in particular if you're working for language schools.
