I would like to hear from those who have been, or are in Vietnam teaching. Is is common practice to have employers pay for your airfare from your native country? Also, will they reimburse your airfare if you do not apply from within your native country. i.e If I apply and get hired while in Vietnam, will I be reimbursed? I realize that this may depend on individual employers/schools, but I was wondering what the standard practice is.
Thanks |

I was in Ho Chi Minh City in JUly and August 2003 and I was offered several teaching positions there. It is completely different to China.
The Vietnamese DO NOT hire over the Internet, do not arrange accommodation and do not reimburse air fares. I have some contacts there - Schools etc. if you would like them.

It's true. I have an M.A. Tesol and experience, and could not find a job from overseas or reimbursement for airfare. I work in a foreign academic institution and they don't even pay airfare! It's a very different setup from China or Thailand. You pretty much need to come here and then find a job. |

You will likely get a back-end, contract completion bonus, but unless you are comming from someplace in Asia, don't count on it covering all of your airfare.

As long as you aren't a 'local hire' it shouldn't be a problem.

The language centers won't have a problem with it, but others Universities and whatnot might, hard to say. |
