Hi fokes this is me first post, So would just like to say hello, and look forward to becoming a teacher abroad in the near future.

I have a question concerning the nature of teaching and specifically what are some of the best areas to teach in? and, also what are the most reliable areas to go to in terms of getting what has been proposed to you by the company or recruiter etc. I was considering going to China, and have been offered a role in Taiwan by reach to teach. But I feel there is a lot of un-professional practice around and more so in china, i guess everywhere though as well. So i was thinking of avoiding China and Taiwan and perhaps going to focus on Japan, as they seem more professional. If anyone could recommend a school in china that would be great, or whether or not Japan is a safer option that would be great.

I appreciate the time taken,

thanks.

Hey! Welcome to the board. I can't really offer an answer to your question without generalizing. Yes, Japan, in general, has a good reputation for honoring the contract and laws to protect you if it isn't honored. Still, you might end up with a great employer in Korea which is notorious for job disputes. It really all depends on the company you work for.

Again generalizing, I think Japan is a good place to start for security, but Korea is probably the best place for salary, benefits, etc. for a new teacher.

Hope this helped a little.

i guess its hard to comment really as both countries like any country offer their own share of malpractice. I appreciate the info though can anyone recommend any organizations in Korea that would be worth contacting for a position.

I am aware of the various jobs in the job board, but i can afford to be stuffed around when i get over there be out of work etc, want a good job where they look after their staff and make sure it is as explained prior to departure.

thanks heaps guys appreciate the assistance.

While I have never worked there, I would like to point out that one good aspect of Japan is that you own your own visa and that your school cannot just fire you and have your visa canceled like in Korea or Taiwan. If your school does not like you, you can just go get another job.

Well you should try to get a job with one of the public schools in Korea. I have not heard of the Board of Education not paying their teachers. The only draw back to teaching at a public school is that you may have 50 students in a class.

Lots of people go to China, good experience, but not the best pay. Japan might be a bit more difficult, I think due to visa changes. Try posting on the Japan forum

I've been in China for 4 1/2 years and have mostly not regretted it. If you choose a decent city it's not a bad place to live and the salary, while not appearing high on paper, is decent relative to local costs. You also get heaps of holiday - I get 4 months paid a year! And that's pretty standard.

I'm actually returning to the UK to do a PGCE so I have full Qualified Teacher Status (or to be a 'certified teacher' as you septics are fond of saying). Once I've got that there's a strong chance I'll return to China to get a 'proper' teaching job. So China is pretty cool. I'm a bit bored of TEFL itself though! Too repetitive!
