It's also possible that we are each right from a particular perspective. I think I understand what perspective you mean when you say it doesn't matter as far as Hong Kong is concerned, and I won't say you're wrong.

I agree that arguing over whether or not a point is or is not relevant from what angle very quickly becomes a waste of time, especially when both sides already understand each other. So, thanks for taking the diplomatic path.
