Immigration will require your original diploma. It seems to me that they are checking to make sure that they will be able to get you a visa rather than going through the process. It sounds like they are going to have you come in on a tourist visa and then change it while you are in Japan. |
Original diploma? First I've heard of this and I've done several applications for staff here including, of course, my own. Never used an original excepting the case of hiring a Filipino when I think they were just being picky due to basic racism.
So, in Nagoya at least, a copy of a diploma is fine. |

Shmooj are you talking about original visa or a renewal? My diploma came to Japan a month before I did. |

first time visas all the way. All I can think is that your company asked for the original without bothering to find out that a copy would have been just fine instead. Ah well, at least you didn't lose it. |

It is quite common for employers and/or immigration to ask for your original college degree/diploma, so I guess you haven't run into them.
Yes, many will accept a certified/notarized copy, but some won't. Counterfeiting is growing. |

I can quite believe this. However, for the record, I have been party to filing of 9 separate applications over 6 years to immigration in Nagoya and, as I said, only 1 required an original certificate for the reason mentioned above. Sounds like a trend/policy to me and a useful thing to know if you are applying in Nagoya.
Now what your employer wants to see may be different entirely. It may be that they want to see an original certificate. |

Shmooj, this is the first time I have heard that you *don't* need to supply the original. I only know about the requirement of the Big 4 in the Kanto region. That's very interesting that Nagoya doesn't require it. I wonder if the Big 4 play it safe now, like they accepted copies before but found that, say, 1 out of 10 visa requests were rejected and required the original, and because the Big 4 handle hundreds and hundreds of visa processing requests then the 1 out of 10 rejections was too time consuming. If my theory makes any sense!! |
