What's it like teaching in China?
Better yet, outside of the school teaching, what is there to do?

K, is a popular choice with the locals. But seriously: eating, shopping, drinking, getting stuff made all good

Most of the time it feels like swimming in a very viscous liquid, against a current. There are occasional moments of euphoria, however.

there is another forum (China Off-Topic) where you can find all sorts of threads about "the best things about China" as well as plenty of "What I hate about China" threads. You could probably get a fair idea about common gripes and also popular pastimes. You have to log in for that one, or register if it's the first time.

I see from your other posts that you will have an AA and not a bachelors degree. There is a little controversy here as to whether China strictly demands a bachelors as a minimum qualification or not, but realistically, you will be able to get work in undesirable (remote, boring) locations where they are desperate for foreigners. You will be excluding yourself from the better jobs, though. And you may have to deal with shady characters and/or work without the proper docs. If the stuff hits the fan, your employers may have connections to avoid hefty fines, but nobody will protect you. There are plenty of pro/con arguments about this and also sob stories and warnings from ripped off teachers on this forum.

Teaching in China is a wonderful choice. The students are curious and yearning to understand the West, regardless of what type of school you work at. I know, don't end a sentence with a preposition, but, that ain't my job.

The way I see it, my job is to share our somewhat similar culture and facilitate conversations in English.

Irregardless of whether you "work" at a regular, traditional, school or a "mill", we are all monkeys! Even you "professional examiners and subject teachers".

Good Luck.

True. Very true. Just that some monkeys get less in the way of peanuts than others.

Maybe you think I'm just an old sea monkey, but please tell this puzzled aquatic simian exactly which dictionary contains the word "irregardless" and how the meaning differs from that of "regardless".
