I am highly considering coming to Vietnam in the very near future and wanted to know how likely it would be that I could find a good job within a week or two. Here are my qualifications: I have a Bachelors degree in Elementary Education with a specialization in English. I have a teaching certificate to teach K-9 in the US. I have taught ESL for about 4 years now in a few different countries in Asia and in the US. The important thing to note is that I do NOT have a TEFL certificate or anything of the sort? Does that exclude me from finding legal work in Vietnam? I've contacted many of the international schools, but it is very difficult to get into those schools. There are many teachers trying for those positions. So, I would appreciate any feedback anyone could give me on what I can expect with my qualifications. How would it work out? Thanks in advance!!! |

Im non-native, I dont have a degree and Ive had 5 months experience and a CELTA when I came here.
Within one week I had 3 jobs.
You wont need a certification since youve been teaching for a while, your experience is worth more. You might spend a bit more time in searching and get yourself one of the cream of the crop jobs at RMTI or one of the better schools. |

Don't know how good that advice is really friendly
Do a search of this forum on either "CELTA" or "TEFL" for lots of discussion about whether a Certification is needed or not. Lot's of schools do require them.

Hey Friendly user- you said that you got a job easily in VN without a degree. Can you share what city that was in? Could you share some names/contact infos for schools that don't need a degree to be hired? It would be really helpful! Thanks. |

Stirge, if I were you I would not play around with English teaching in the long run. Get onto the International School gravy train and you'll be a happy camper. |

Is the CELTA especially favored, or would a similar program like a TEFL cert from a US university have similar clout in Vietnam? |

Timing is everything. Currently there is an excess of teachers in Hanoi due to the post Tet glut. If you don't want to be hired from overseas then the best time to arrive in Hanoi is mid May, which is just before the very busy summer season. |

What if the person just has an online TEFL certificate and an Associates degree? |

What if a person has 2 blue buttons, an old bicycle, 4 keys, and a well-used length of string?
