the going rate for a Polish beer in any of the bars in Poznan rynek is 9-12 Zl a pint

i still find this number staggering. i've been to Poznan several times, in the Rynek, and even including the clubs, i've never paid more than 7.50 for a domestic draft.

"18 and 118 Zl a shot in Poz."

i hear that. in wroclaw, the cost of descent whiskey is just obscene (i say descent because the whiskey selection leaves much to be desired), which is a shame, because next to beer, whiskey is my poison of choice. when i go to the states, the first thing i head for when my father and I get to talking is his cognac/whiskey shelf.

"300zl a day for food, booze and buying stuff"

again, this number is amazing. biff.......big pimpin'.

"sometimes I spend a lot more especially when I'm drinking with round shirkers like the Poles and teachers, (I stress teachers), from Uncle Sam, who have very long pockets and very short arms:)"

that old gag. i still find it surprising that one can stereotype an entire country's bar etiquette like that, but then again, I have only met and drank with 1 American while in Wroclaw (we split the bill, for the record.) the Brits I have met and drank with in Wroclaw simply seem to be more bar oriented, and spend a heck of alot of time and money in them.

"So, back to Polish girls. Yep they're beautiful but generally speaking I find them feckin nuts. How many have you deflowered who have been in long term relationships? How many buy a drink or choose a mid priced item of clothing when you're treating them. How many suddenly develop tastes that they could only have read about in magazines? Back in the 90's we used to call them 'schemies'...they're actually an expat kind of groupie."

i hear ya biff, but in the end, if you were getting caught up in that it's your own fault. not to mention, if you're duping married chicks, what does that make you??? a good semaritan? you were in it for the game.....so were these "feckin nuts" Polish girls. you get yours, they get theirs. Wink

Aww you got me. Never claimed to be an angel hence the 'Shallow Hal' comment.
Polish girls...they're good looking and that's it. Real conversation is hard because English isn't their native tongue and Poles aren't interested in anything outside their city.
Where did you drink in the Rynek? Some duff place like Puzon?
J. Walker Blue Label is 120zl+ in the square.

Is anybody renting out their properties? How is it going? If you have a mortgage, is the rent covering it?

My wife and I are in the process of increasing the rent we charge on the two places we own and rent out, but even then we'll just barely be covering the mortgage for the one place that has a mortgage. What we are charging now is a bit on the low side and the increase is in line, but doesn't it seem a little bizarre that the rent from two places doesn't cover or barely covers the mortgage for one of them?

Any experiences to share?

Don't want to pry,but I recently saw an ad for a 200,000zl mortgage at a rate of 880/month. 400,000 would therefore be uner 2,000/ month...that seems ok to me.
What are rough figures for borrowing 3-5 00,000 over 25 years? Can you get 100% mortgages if your salary is paid into the Polish bank from which you've borrowed the dosh? Love to know, might save me some hassle. Most of my friends who bought in Poland were bank managers/auditors and stuff like that on UK salaries and therefore didn't need to go down the mortgage road.
In 2006 my flat in Warsaw came with the job, but the kawalerka I rented on Grochowska (in Poznan) , which is half way down Grunwaldska was 1,000 a month + bills. It was one room +kitchen area+bathroom and had furniture. It was on the 4th floor of a 5 storey, ex commi building....so no great shakes. Kamienica type flats were a lot cheaper. Anything new was ridiculous.
I just don't get it the new build stuff is so cheap looking...once the paint has faded they'll look terrible.

True,
Buying to let can be very hit and miss as the rental income barely covers the mortgage payments, not including other buying costs.
There is nothing new about this.
The way to do it is to make the mortgage payments deductable as business costs (Or the lion's share thereof).
To do this they have to be part of an existing business that incurs taxable income.
Talk to a good accountant about this. One that speaks good English!!
