I remember Guy mentioning something about Carlos Sims. That mention was the first I'd ever heard of Mr. Sims.

Reading the Winnipeg Free Press this morning there is mention of Mr. Sims, and I have a feeling by this afternoon anyone reading a major daily in North America with a modicum of interest in business news will know who he is.

Here's the quote:
TORONTO -- Bill Gates has been dethroned after 13 years at the top of the Forbes list of the world's richest people.

Forbes.com says Gates, the co-founder of Microsoft, has fallen to number three, even though his net worth increased by $2-billion US over the past year, putting his net worth at $58-billion US.

Forbes says the top spot has been taken over by financier and philanthropist Warren Buffett.

Forbes says Buffett's net worth stands at $68-billion -- up 10 billion from a year ago.

Ranked number two is Carlos Slim Helu, a Mexican telecom tycoon whose net worth has doubled in just two years to $60-billion.

Yep. Carlos Slim became numero uno about a year ago, and it was widely reported in the international press at that time.

According to my quote, Calos Sims wasn't ranked first this year, nor was he ranked first last year. Unless the news article I quoted is inaccuate.

I did a search, and found this thread from last year. If you skip to page 2, you'll find that I posted a link to his becoming the richest man in the world last July.

Here is one of the articles published last summer.

Funny coincidence...

Right after I posted that last link, I heard a news story on the radio state that as of today, poor ol' Slim has dropped back to number two, with a net worth of 'only' $60 billion dollars. Warren Buffett is back to number one, with a worth of $62 billion.

Which is about 50,000,000 times more money than I have in the bank right now.... Neutral

I don't suppose the odd billion or so matters too much when you're at that level of wealth! Very Happy

Really, an example. I'm no fan of the super-rich, but can you show us how Slim, for example, cut someone's life short?

I assumed that we all knew what neo-liberalism was all about.

Happy reading!

I was wondering the same thing. The only thing cutting people's lives short where I am, is probably tequila consumption. Gringos on vacation. Maybe Slim does have something to do with it.
