A leftist activist?
A tax accountant?
A military medical instructor?

I'm beginning to think you're pulling our legs. Laughing

Maybe I am overconfident, but I worked as a tax accountant for over 20 years, and cannot imagine there is all that much work for a Mexican accountant to do for a client who keeps good records.

It's not you, it's the system. It changes and mutates frequently and you would have to know where to look to keep abreast of all the updates, and be able to read and understand them (in Spanish, of course). Mind you, I have no talent for this stuff so it's quite possible I could be underestimating you.

Not to mention the son who lives (or lived?) in a cave somewhere in Mexico!

I agree somewhat with Guy in his statement that if there are not very many TEFL instructors in Veracruz it probably means that there is not much of a market. Let me add that I spent a year in Merida, Yucatan whose population is 740,000 and found it extremely difficult to make a living. There simply was not enough work.
I would think, however, that Veracruz with its shipping companies, has an advantage over Merida, with its tourism base. Most of the students in Merida taking English and paying good money are professionals, doctors, lawyers and accountants as is here in DF. I would suggest doing your research and finding out which transport companies are located in Veracruz and approach them to offer your services. I would also research which multinational manufacturers are located in the area.
If you are freelancing your ESL services then place an ad in the daily newspaper at least once a month for three consecutive days, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. I found those three days elicited the maximum number of telephone responses.
Here in DF there is at least one freelancer ESL instructor who distributes handbills to passerbys. My own thought on that matter is that if you have been in DF for more than a few years, the referrals would eliminate the need to do that.
You could always make up several thousand b.c.s and hand them out at cultural events, i.e. concert recitals and theatrical productions as the people attending them would be your most likely students.

No, really! I occasionally exaggerate, but ...what a long, strange trip it's been.

I retired from the IRS after more than twenty years of service, plus 4 years in the service, where I was a medical instructor. I became an activist after I switched from Baptist to Mennonite (which was also a long venture). Most Mennonites are quiet, but we went and tried to help the Tzotzil Mayas make peace after the massacre.

Perhaps it relates to my age, and my restlessness. Short of publishing the family photos on the internet, I really do have six kids, including twin girls and a weird hippie. I saw the actual cave my son lived in, and he retrieved stuff from it that he had left behind. Oh, he could have made it up, but he made a great effort to take me to the cave.

I do not need to make these things up, truth really is stranger than fiction.

Thanks leslie,

Can you use these sites for free? When I registered with insideout, I had to enter the ISBN of the Macmillan dictionary I had supposedly bought. Since I hadn't done so, I couldn't complete the registration.

Thanks, for checking out the insideout website. I'll try to find the ISBN on Amazon and see what happens.

Thanks, Melee. The problem with the website is that in addition to the ISBN, they ask you 4 questions which need to be answered by consulting whatever dictionary it is that you supposedly have bought. You have to get at least 3 of them correct to be eligible to use the site for free, so I guess I'll be skipping this one.
