Hi I need to use my Korean debit card ("maestro") in Taipei. Doesn anyone know from experience if this is possible and if so which banks' ATM's will do it?

My Chinatrust bank card, that can be used at the ATM's in 7-Elevens, has a Maestro logo on the back.

Depending on when the card was issued and which bank it was, it will not work in Taipei.

As of October 2007, ALL Korean banks(against the wishes of the Korean government) suspended international access for non-Korean residents. Even if your card reads "International" anywhere on it, it will not work outside of Korea, unless you are a Korean citizen, born or married. If you are not in Korea, you cannot get your money. I know this for a fact, since I was stranded in Thailand in January 08. Even employees of the banks are not exempt. One woman from New Zealand working for Koori(spelling?) here in Korea still cannot access her account outside of Korea.

MODS: This post mentions Korea often, but is relevent to the OP's question about Taiwan. Please do not remove.

vessel2000: yeah, it's outrageous really! My card still hasn't worked anywhere. I've had to send it to a previous employer asking them to withdraw my money and transfer it to a new Taiwanese account. It's only a 1000 odd US, but its all I've got! Ridiculous, in the 21st century - having to trust foreign people and everything!

I wonder if there is the same problem with Taiwanese accounts. The Bank of Taiwan is being irksome recognising my American Express travelers cheques (I contacted AE and they told me to get the bank to call them...). My UK debit cards would work practically anywhere.

Thanks for the valuable information from experience.

Cheers,

Trubadour.
