Hi,
I am looking for a 6 month post in Korea to teach, starting in the new year. There appear to be plenty of jobs available, but all offering 1 year contracts only. Is there any way round this problem, or any agreement i can look to reach with potential employers? Any advice would be helpful.
Cheers,
Dan |

You might want to try posting this on the Korean Job Forums. This is the "everywhere else on Earth" forum.
I have no first hand experience, but from what I've read on the net, it seems that immigration only offers one year working visas in South Korea. All the jobs I've seen were for a year at least. You'll want to confirm that, though. |

Yes you should try the Job Related board for Korea...The thing with Korea is that most jobs fly teachers over on the E2 visa and it isnt worth their while just for 6 months...If you can fly there on your own would give you some bargaining power...Just tell the school upfront what you want to do...
Another option : Sign for a year. Give your notice after 3 months and leave after 6. You will lose some benefits but it will be perfectly legal and everyone will be happy...
PS I left about 6 months ago and have heard the job market has tightened up a lot. Might be a case of take what you can find now...Good luck.. |

Some contracts have clauses that say if you give two months notice before you want to leave, you aren't penalized. You could sign a one year contract, and four months into it, give two months notice. |

In my experience, and among those whom I have personally met, I don't know of anyone who left a 1 year Korean contract early, giving proper notice according to their contract, and not being cheated rotten by their Korean employer.
If you are going to do this, insist on being paid weekly at the least. Since you have no effective legal options in Korea, and least taht way yu'll only lose a week's pay if your employer decides on your last day that he doesn't feel like paying you.
And DON'T let him even touch your passport. |

Personally, I'm going back to the same university in Shenyang on a six month contract - again. I don't mind paying for half my airfare. Six months - actually 4 1/2 - is fun. Longer is work. |

I guess I'm the first. I left my Korean contract after 6 months (we gave a month's notice). The boss bought us a one-way ticket, so we called it even. We agreed not to make waves and be cooperative and he didn't screw with our pay. It all worked in the end (were we ever worried though), but he was a crook beforehand and it is why we left in the first place. That was almost 9 years ago.[/quote] |

I have to say that I wish I'd signed up for a six-month contract. After 7 months in Jakarta I'm more than ready to move on and work somewhere else. I can't see ever signing another 12-month contract again. |
