I would love to live and work in Indonesia, but most jobs there will not provide me with the kind of financial security that I need at this stage in my career. I made a serious attempt to land a job in Indonesia, but was not successful in finding one that matched my needs.

For that reason, working in places like Saudi will still give me the opportunity to come to Indonesia during the long holidays (3 months per year) that Saudi typically offers, and I will continue my studies at http://www.puribahasa.net in Yogyakarta during my breaks. I will also look to Indonesia as a possible retirement venue when the time comes.

Then why have you been wasting all our time here about coming to Indonesia.

assclown, he's already been to Indonesia! And if he's wasting your time, then go and find another thread where people will show you the appreciation you deserve for how important your time is.

I was wondering how long it would take, for someone to insult another. I dont think there is a thread on this forum that hasnt turned into an argument. Sooner or later it will be locked.

Sigh (some people)...obviously I meant coming to Indonesia to work. Ghost has been posting for months about how he wants to live in Indonesia next year and how excited he his. He has asked every question under the sun, people have helped him with jobs and then he turns around and says he's not going to come to Indonesia because of the pay.....um hello, surely he knew what the pay was going to be before he came as there are soooo many posts on here about pay expectations in Indonesia. Thus, I think this guy is a time waster. My opinion, no need to get snotty and start calling names.

This forum is turning into a place for Ghost to tell us about his life instead of a place to ask and receive informed answers about ESL in Indonesia.

Comparing countries is interesting as I find wherever you go for the first time and particularly on holidays you only focus on the positives and usually find anywhere to be an enjoyable experience. This is why I feel ghost was very happy here in Indonesia and not in Korea where he has had to survive the mundane schedule and seeing some of the same faces everyday for over a year.
I for one loved Indonesia for the first time but now could hardly recommend it to anyone. I will say though that I have lived in and around Jakarta the whole time and there may be better places around the country. But is there work in any of them.
Going back to the pay and conditions, I wonder if salary vs cost of living would be much different as although the pay is poor in Indo the cost is small if you avoid 'bule' traps.

GHOST: Salaries in Saudi are rubbish at the moment. I worked there before the dollar went *beep* up and saved a fair bit. Now, English teachers are all over the show, and accepting some fairly poor salaries (there was a very lucrative gig going at BAe recently though.)

Forget Saudi, there are plenty of fine contracts available in the Far East.

If you can't find work in Indonesia that pays at the scale you prefer, then something must be wrong with your credentials. Indonesia is wide open at the moment, especially in the corporate communications market. If you stick to the private language mills or private/public schools and colleges, you won't get very far at all.
