My university ID has gotten me into some museums for free. From my experience the discount on bus seats is for a designated few seats and they are often the less desirable ones. (Aisle seat next to the bathroom.) I need a window seat for long-haul rides if I'm going to get any sleep Sad Maybe some other bus lines don't have the restrictions?

Some buslines do have restrictions, such as only being able to board a particular bus, as opposed to getting onto any you wish. I've gotten up to 25% discounts, showing nothing more than my school ID. Never had to show a paystub. Same thing with museums.

I don't have a teacher's id, but (along with my paystub) do you think my fm-3 would suffice?

Add archaelogical sites to the list.
At most sites, it's free, some a discount. Privately managed sites don't offer a teachers discount.
I've never been asked to show a pay stub--but my teacher's id cards expire and are re-issued each year, I imagine the pay stub is so they know that you are still a teacher and the id is not old????
The ADO group of buses, doesn't restict the seats, but they do allow only TWO teacher discounts on any given bus, so you have to buy your tickets well in advance to get them.

Unfortunately, I don't think you're FM3 would suffice, ask the school maybe they have IDs but just haven't given you one?

I've often been told "The discount is only for national teachers." Meaning they don't take the CIEE International Teacher's Card. But when I show them my ID from the Mexican university where I teach they always accept me as a "national teacher".

Thanks for this advice. I just booked my trips and all my tickets say "Maestra" on them. I am not sure how much I saved because I didn't know how much the tickets should have cost, but the price was well, well below what I had budgeted for. I didn't have to show a pay stub, which is good because I don't get them!

Ive used my FM3 to get into the Anthropology Museum free on Sundays. One of my favorite bookstores for English texts is OPTIONS bookstore in the metro hidalgo area and they offered me 15% off any books I buy for students. I havent reached that Rubicon yet so I did not avail myself of that privilege. The discount is predicated on the display of a teachers id.

I know there`s going to be a groan of protest from Guy on account of this one, posted previously, but there is a hair training school in the glorietta Insurgentes that gives free haircuts. Get there early in the morning at 9 and you won`t have to wait the hour.

No, no protest. I've decided that the more you go to that place, the better my hair looks when you and I are out on the town together, my friend. Wink

Teacher IDs are great for all over Mexico. WE just got back from ChiChen Ixza near Merida, and with an ID you get 25 percent off. Here in Nayarit we get 50 percent off all first class buses that go anywhere in Mexico, as well as to the USA. We have taken them all over Mexico. The IDs had to include SEP, and the SEP number which our Director provided for us on all our school IDs. WE have never been asked to sit in second class, or take a different bus. We are treated in fact with an overwelming amount of respect and special attetention to our needs. Being with SEP, the Federal educational program, has benifited us as teachers, as well as earned us a great amount of respect. I have 2 students that are upper level SEP Supervisors, and they have been helpful in supplying me with great amounts of information. I personally would refuse, and file a complaint with the bus company if I was asked to sit in second class or only non desirable seats because of my ID. That is simply unacceptable.
