oh, winters are long and hard!
I've a mind to say I've lost all my ideas and principles, which is not true exactly, but I have to say I regularly transgress them! If I'm honest, it's practically a kind of sport with me. Sometimes I'm surprised at my actions - for example I drove hundreds of miles without havng ever got a licence or taken any proper lessons (my Dad let my practice in car parks a few times) - without thinking about it as something obviously dangersous 'wrong'. It wan't until I was caught that I realised and was quite surprised by my actions. But life is full of surprises and 'the self' is certainly no exception!
Values and princilples are important and dangerous. It's important to be aware of them, because preconceptions can pervade our thought on the matter. You really look at yourself or examine values without being honest and free from predjudice or preconceptions. And being honest, even with yourself, is sometimes very hard!
I think being aware/discusted with yourself, your desires, your actions, your fears, etc, is a very important part of being human.
The processes reevaluation and of change, of forgetting and of reflecting on who you are is also very, very important. 'The unexamined life...' and all that.
Just be careful: how do you measure virtue? What is right and wrong? Why should you compare yourself to values you have not created? Can you, should you, freely choose some of your own?
These are really good questions of religion and ethics and is of genuine existential concern. I would suggest really looking into the questions you raise and examining the answers you give to them. Beyond Good and Evil by Neitzshe is a classic example of someone doing just that.
If you don't mind me saying, it seems to me that you are judging certain values or actions with others you have accepted, uncritically. Like you are lost in a hall of mirrors, looking at the mirrors with other mirrors. If you are not careful, all you will find is confusion. But if you can really work throuh it (a life's work) looking at each mirror with a true eye, you will be able to recognise the truth of each. |

I have my own school here.
My wife is Taiwanese.
There are some terrible people here and there are some great people here.
I can say the same about every country I have been to or lived in.
The fact that you took a job where another person was also a candidate has nothing to do with your morals or ethics. We are forced to choose the best fit for our organizations. You got the job. Great. Whether the reason you got it is right is irrelevant to your morals.
I have had really horrible landlords and I have had great ones. The current landlord where we rent the school paid for something one of our students broke because he considered it part of the building. You really get this everywhere. Taking a hard stance when negotiating and threatening to take a more severe action also has nothing to do with your morals. You state that you are Christian. DO you recall the part in the bible where Christ empties the temple of merchants. There is nothing wrong with standing up for what you believe in.
How much corporate experience do you have? There is lying and deceiving everywhere. We just do not always experience it. I don't think there is more here. I think it is more blatant here but there is not more.
If you feel stuck or in a rut here PM me and we'll chat. Don't let life here get you down.
Join a church if you haven't already or work a day or two a month in an orphanage. You'll soon see how similar people really are. |
