Just want to know a few more dishes to order here at restaurants. Anyone have names in Romanized Mandarin that I can try out? By this I mean, I'm looking for dishes that are a little more formal than just the local vendors, or xiao-chi'rs.

There's kind of a tug-of-war going on with the expats and the Taiwanese where I live. Most expats dislike Taiwanese food. The Taiwanese, however, are adamant it's the best food around the globe.

I want to experiment and find out a few more that are as filling as Hua Gua.

this is a bump. Even the Vegetarian in Taiwan facebook group has no information. Gimme a second and I'll try and look up something on the www. It must have been covered there somewhere...

You find anything?

Look out for a swastika (the buddhist one, not the nazi one). It denotes a vegetarian restaurant.

dangerousapple: I heard that but have had no luck, so far. I heard it really denotes a temple but you might find a vege restaurant nearby. Is this necessarily true and the case Taiwan-wide?

My Chinese is so limited I can't even write the words for 'I dont want meat' in pinyin, though I know how to say it. Are there any good ways to ask for one?

What we really need is a list of dishes in Chinese and Pinyin with an English description...

If you're looking for the swastika, you'll miss about 90% of vegetarian eateries. They are on virtually every block, and they all proudly display the characters meaning "vegetarian food." ???pinyin: su4 shi2, 'shi' being pronounced like "shh," similar to the word for "ten").

There are about 20 vegetarian places within walking distance of where I live. I can only think of one that displays the Buddhist swastika. Once you memorize the character for vegetarian, you've got it made in Taiwan. You'll be able to find them everywhere. You'll never have to eat anywhere else. But if you do eat at a non-vegetarian place, you can say the words, "I eat vegetarian food." ???? (pinyin: wo3 chi1 su4 shi2).
