hi, i'm currently teaching english in korea. the best way to earn money here is to do two part time jobs. it's easy to make around 450,000 yen a month this way.
is it possible to do the same in japan in the major cities? can you make as much money? i have a year and a half of teaching experience so hopefully this could work to my advantage.
But i understand that the reason they pay so much in Korea is because it's kind of culturally void and not many people want to go there where as everyone wants to go to the strange and wonderful Japan.
I used to live in Japan and would love to go back but money is very important at this time, can i have my cake and eat it?
any advice would be greatly appreciated |

No
If making money is important then stay in Korea. |

If, as you say, money is important to you and you are making 450,000 yen a month, you might want to stay in Korea a bit longer and save up before coming to Japan. There are posters here who will claim to make that kind of money teaching privates on top of a full-time eikaiwa-like job (which is probably what a year and a half of experience will get you), but I gotta think it would be rather difficult. |

Stay put. It would most likely take quite some time for you to earn a comparable income here. It all depends on how well your qualifications meet current job market demands. |

I agree with the above comments. In 5 years in Japan I never made anywhere near 450k per month, even when teaching part time on the side in addition to a full time job.
If money is what you want, stay where you are. You'll never make that much in Japan as an Eikaiwa teacher. |

People claim that supplemental work with their starting job of 250,000 brings up their salary to 450K to 600K, but they usually report that they work 6-7 days a week to do that, and it's not something usually reported for people in their first year here.
Moreover, I understand that in Korea your rent is paid by the employer. Don't expect that here. |

taxes are less in Korea.
The cost of living is less, although prices have gone up in Korea.
It depends what you want.
I don't make 450,000 a month, and don't want to work extra in order to make that kind of money.
Years ago I had a part-time job in addition to my full-time one but it kind of burned me out.
I prefer to use my spare time by going to Japanese class or walking my dogs. |

you don't have to burn yourself out to earn that kind of money, you just need two part time jobs, you don't get the benefits(which are very few in Korea anyway) but the money is great, but the problem is i hate kids. |

I keep hearing this about Korea and it seems to have become a broken record mantra among expats involved with Korea.
Korea really is THAT culturally void? There's nothing outside of work to offer to the expat EFL teacher? Hmm... I wonder about this.
