Hello friends:
I'm looking for feedback/advice from anyone whose had experience with the schools in subject line above. I've interviewed with a recruiter from HESS and I've submitted my resume to TFC. Both seem to be highly reputable institutions, but I'm looking for 'first hand' advice/experiences. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!!! Smile

Never heard of TFC. Hess is huge and its reputableness (is that a word?) comes from fact that it is the biggest not necessarily the best. Think 'MacDonalds', Reputable yes, the best? ummmmmmmm

I've never heard of TFC , however there are many posts on HESS on the forum if you can be bothered doing a search.

I worked for Hess for a year. Generally my experience was good. Working conditions at my branch were fine and I got on ok with the Chinese Teachers (the most important aspect of the job imo). However, I think it depends which branch you work at. I believe that at least two thirds of people quit before their contract expires. I would put this down to a combination of (perceived) poor working conditions and homesickness.

Due to the set curriculum the work is fairly straightforward once you get used to it although there is little room for creativity. I would recommend it as a 1st job but if you have teaching experience you may regret signing.

That is absolutely true. HESS is awful and it amazes me that they still manage to find people to work there. All you need to do is a little research online to see all the complaints about them. It's just a bad place to work and you can do so much better.

I've also noticed recently how they spam advertisements everywhere because they are so desperate.

Out of my training class of 30+ new teachers, more than TWENTY didn't finish their contracts. Most didn't even come close.
As mentioned above, they do have some really good branches, but they are few and far between.

Just don't put yourself through that.

Hess is okay for starting teachers.

Avoid Kindy - that is the main cause for people quitting, way too much drama over kindy

Low Pay - the next reason people leave, the pay is low

Otherwise, the structure is nice (my school now has almost none, and that isnt good)

I worked for Hess for six months. Yes, I broke my contract. My reasons didn't have much to do with Hess, though, and more to do with myself. I didn't like the fact that I was working for a corporation, and I wanted to teach older kids. If you like teaching kids in the 6-11 year old group, it's fine.

My only warning is if you're coming to the Taichung area and you're working for Hess: find your own housing. Go on Tealit, find it yourself. The main complaint I heard besides the commute some people had to do was about the terrible housing they ended up getting hooked up with. If they insist on getting you settled, insist back that you'll do it on your own.
