In a thread some time back, someone provided the name of a useful business English textbook that was available in the major bookstores in Shanghai.

I've searched for that thread and can't find it. Can anyone recommend a text (preferably with exercises) that they feel is the best available? This is for 25 to 30 year-olds with a quite good level of comprehension.

Thanks.

I recommend Market Leader, a four book / level series. It's a popular Business English textbook series with language training providers for good reason I think. Market Leader books are published by Pearson Longman www.pearsoned.com , and have been made available here in China through Higher Education Press. The books, in my opinion, incorporate Financial Times texts nicely so as to focus comprehension exercises with targeted vocabulary and phrases. The case studies can be useful if you're and they're into role playing exercises.

If you want, bearcanada, you are welcome to pm me an address (in China) and I'll send you a set of course books (with CDs) and teacher's books for levels 1, 2 and 4 (I don't have 3).

PM sent with thanks. Any other suggestions? The books mentioned in the above post are not those which were recommended in the earlier thread and I would still like to recall that name.

Thanks,

Bearcanada,

One textbook that is often used in China is New International Business English, by Leo Jones and Richard Alexander (C.U.P). It costs only 39 RMB (at the Shanghai Foreign Languages Bookstore). A teacher's guide and audio tapes are also available for the text.

A couple of other textbooks that you might find useful are:

- Teach Business English, by Sylvie Donna (C.U.P);

- Teaching Business English, by Mark Ellis and Christine Johnson (originally O.U.P, but in China published by the Shanghai Foreign Language Education Press) .

The latter is available at the aforementioned bookshop, but the Donna book is probably not. I obtained my copy in Australia, from the America Bookstore, in Brisbane.

Do you mean:
1. an EAP course with business studies/issues emphasis,
2. an English language Business studies course,
3. an office/business related general English course?

What about:

"Getting ahead: A communication skills course for Business English" (CUP) - (HuaXia Publishing House) Sarah Jones-Macziola and Greg White

or

"Working in English" (CUP) - (Posts & Telecom Press) Leo Jones

There is a comparatively new series from Pearson publishers called
"Intelligent Business".
This is Pre-Int/Int/Upper Int levels and contains authentic texts from the Economist. It is benchmarked across the BEC exam site.
It has accompanying skills book with CD-Rom + workbook with audio CD.
If you check out their website <www.intelligent-business.org> you can get free resources and downloadable word lists.

I hope this helps!

Sounds like a good series.

Yes, I forgot to mention that there are a lot of BEC Test related text books related in China.
