|
I got my Geos bonus through on Dec 6th. I was due about 175,000 Yen and after taxes and the exchange rate of the day, I should have received just a little over 600. The amount I actually got was 321. I've emailed my trainer in Japan (over a week ago) and haven't received a reply back yet.
Where would you suggest I go from here? I have no idea of my legal standing on the matter being back in the UK.
Thanks |

Emails can be lost in a spam bin, or the receiver could be on vacation. Send another, or call.
Was there any explanation (or likely one)? |

Just the first thought that popped into my head- if this is one you get at the end of the contract once you return home, do they take off money for lost accomodation deposit (cleaning charge etc.) and your last lot of utility bills? |

On December 6th the exchange rate was around 229. So even if you've been given a really crap exchange rate of, say, 235, then what you've received amounts to only about Y75,000. That's a long, long way off what you said you were due!
So how did you come to the figure of Y175,000 as what you were expecting? Not suggesting you've made a mistake, but just wondering. I know you posted about this bonus a few months ago and said it was a lump sum plus length of stay x manager evaluation score. Obviously you know your length of stay, but had you been told what both the lump sum and your manager's evaluation score were?
I also had the same initial thought as alexcase above about accommodation related deductions - in my experience in Japan (at least in my area), you tend to often not get back your security deposit - however well you clean, they always seem to find something to charge you for. I'm not sure that would explain an apparent discrepancy of Y100,000 though. |

Since over half of the GEOS bonus is based on 'evaluations', if you score poorly (and it is entirely up to them what score you get), you can almost cut the bonus in half and consider that is what you will get.
When I left GEOS, they never told me what my score was, and at the time I recall thinking that this is money we are talking about.............WHY would they have any motivation to score me high when they save money by scoring me low?
I considered it a purely subjective exercise, and actually did consider it to be a 'bonus' considering that only half of it was 'guaranteed'.
Isn't there like a 20 percent tax on bonuses too?
Im guessing that you got hit with the tax, (intentional) low evaluation, and a bad exchange rate.....and possibly even a bank charge.....I don't think you have any recourse whatsoever.
When I got my bonus, it was simply a deposit into my account and much less than I hoped for. I never bothered to complain, and they probably ignored your email. |

I too got screwed by GEOS on my bonus. Sparkling reference letter, but the bonus was much, much less than I would have gotten even with the worst review. Tried to contact the closest office, tried emailing my area leader, but never heard a word back.
So, what can you do?
I choose to cut my losses and tell friends to beware. Loved my students, but the company was disorganized and I'd never work for them again. |

What about city tax? If you have been here for a long time you might find that GEOS have taken out a year's worth of city tax. Remember that last year city tax went up a lot. Did you pay city tax out of your final month's pay or did they deduct it from your bonus? |

They took the tax out of my last pay check.
Never mind. Live and learn. |
