Student loans have always been unfriendly. If you have a BOA account in the USA, you can deposit direct to that account through Santander or Scotia Bank for a fee of 25 dollars per transfer. Does not change with hire amount. You can go online with BOA and do direct pay, where they pay for you automatically every month. Then your family does not have to do anything. The BOA does all the work. BOA is great and trustworthy in payments and you have a receipt from a bank. The loan cannot say they were not paid, Bank of America gives great records. I hope this might help. |

$25 US per transfer is pretty hefty considering a Paypal transfer only charges about 3% on the transaction amount...I guess I'll stick with that. |

I do not know how much you owe, but check with your loan company you owe and see if they will do a automatic withdrawl from your credit card here. I know that one person here pays for his storage in the USA with his Santander Credit card, automatic. If your husband is Mexican he can get a easy credit card through your bank. It cost nothing for them to automatic withdrawl. He has done it for a year, and it pays his storage every month on time. He does nothing. Sky TV here does the same. Automatic withdrawl. They will pay a debt in the USA |

We will try to set up the PayPal thing soon |
Can you let me know if this pans out for you? I had almost figured it out, but got stumped when Banamex wouldn't let me have a credit card without an FM2. The only way I almost got it to work was to open 2 paypal accounts, one with my US accounts and one with my mexican, to "Send Money" between the two. The only catch is you need both a Mexican bank account and a credit card (debit cards don't work for online purchases, at least in my experience) to qualify to send money. Just a bank account won't cut it. Sigh. Still looking though, and I'll gleefully report back if I can figure out any way to send money freely back to the states. Student loans. |

I have a Canadian bank account, it isn't Scotia. I have a Visa card and an interac card.
In Canada, as is the custom, I never carry cash, at least not a lot of cash. I use interac and my Visa.
My banking is done online. I'll continue banking online with my Canadian money. When I'm employed in Mexico I'll open a Mexican bank account for my Mexican earnings. I will not work without an FM3, not worth the risk.
O-kay, here's my question. I'm wondering how much cash I will need to carry in Mexico? I plan to travel to Chihuahua, Creel, Los Mochis, Mazatlan, Durango and Zacatecas. Not sure how much farther I'll go, but that gives you an indication of the size of the cuidads y pueblos enroute.
How often will merchants carry Visa? I dread carrying cash, for no reason other than I haven't done so for years and years. I envision having a hard time calculating how much cash I need, running out and not being able to get cash, or having trouble figuing out how much cash I need and paying exorbidant bank fees. |

Ever since I filed for personal bankruptcy a few years ago, I haven't had a credit card. But I've been able to use my Visa debit cards (from two different American banks) for on-line purchases both in the U.S. and and Mexico. |

Go with cash. And try not to go with only 500 peso notes (or sometimes even 200!) as some places, especially in smaller towns/stores, will not have change for you. It can be quite annoying, but is common enough to try and prepare for it.
Visa, I hardly ever use, and only major stores/retailers will accept it (likely). As for debit cards, again, same as credit cards. |

That's something I find frustrating about being back in Canada - no one carries even five or ten dollars in their wallet anymore. I'll be standing in line at a 7-11 or a Tim Horton's and someone pays for a $2 item with their freaking bank card! I stand there and wait an extra minute while the buyer fumbles around with sliding their card through the reader and punching in their PIN. Hey, carry a few bucks in your wallet or purse - it's a lot faster for everyone involved!
Sorry. Anyways, I found that any town with more than say 8000 or 10000 people would have bank machines handy, and I never had problems using my Canadian bank card at any of various machines. I usually would pull out say 500 or 1000 pesos at a time, and found that was plenty for meals, buses, etc. When travelling I might carry a bit more to pay for hotel rooms and such. |

Any place of a decent size will have ATMs that are easily available. I look for the PLUS sign on ATMs to make sure they are compatible with my CND card.
I have also used travellers cheques before, but they can be a huge pain in the ... I have had trouble cashing them at various HSBC branches in Mexico (at least when I was up north in Mty and Torreon). |

I use my debit card many times to purchase things online. Never a problem. I'm still in the States but will be leaving for DF on April 14 and I'm hoping I'll still be able to use it to purchase things online from the States.
Everyone probably knows this but just in case a few don't, if you're planning to use a credit card in Mexico that was issued to you from the States, call the credit card company first and tell them that you're going to Mexico and will be using your card down there. If you don't inform them and you use your card in Mexico, the company may freeze your card because they'll think someone is using it illegally in Mexico. |

That happened to me shortly after I moved to Mexico last fall. It was a big pain in the butt to get it straightened out. Just getting hold of an international toll-free phone number to call my bank took forever! |

Sorry for not being clear. I meant to say that Mexican bank-issued debit cards don't work for online purchases. American ones work just dandy. However, to get a paypal account functioning properly with a Mexican bank account, you need a Mexican credit card to validify the account. A Mexican debit card won't cut it. As far as I've figured out. |
