Hi,
I will be shortly be looking at listings for apartments in Hong Kong and I am hoping that I will be able to find a room mate.
My first question is, do you have any resources other than asiaxpat.com in which I may find listings for people wanting to share a place?
Also, is it unlikely that I will find people other than expatriates who are willing to do this? While it would be nice to find other expats and thereby have a little slice of home (et cetera), I am studying Chinese and I would like to keep it sharp.
Other than that, have any of you any suggestions on good neighborhoods in which to live that are pretty local and somewhat centralized? All of my friends in Hong Kong have been discouraging this ("you'll be eaten alive......"), but I'm not listening to them.
Thanks for your help.

You needn't worry about your friends' remarks, I'm sure you will enjoy the experience.
When you get here you can look at the HK magazine - that advertises people who want to share accommodation.
You are coming to Hong Kong and it is a small place. If you want to live on Hong Kong Island then North Point is a good place which is central but still feels local.
I suggest you get a serviced apartment and then find out where you want to live from there |

Actually, serviced apartments are very reasonably priced highly competitive in fact. I know single people who have spent years in such places. Some are even less than $10,000 a month now (Hung Hom, Ma On Shan, etc.).
My question is why on Earth would you want shared accommodation? I think it is downright impractical for, as a teacher in a busy, stressful, high-workload environment such as HK, no matter how well organised and/or diligent you are, you will have to eventually take work home occasionally. It will not be at all easy preparing and marking when you have anyone let alone strangers coming and going at all hours making noise and commotion.
HK is crowded and jam-packed enough as it is, and you will not want to be cramped at home as well. You will need privacy, security, and peace and quiet. I cannot see you getting any of these in shared accommodation, no matter who you share with.
What do you mean by 'pretty local'? I do think you would necessarily want to reside in Sham Shui Po, for example. And what do you mean by 'centralized'? HK has no 'centre' as such, but rather has numerous centres. |

Hi,
Sorry for the hijack here. My young daughter is in hong kong working and needs to find an apartment.
At the moment shes living in a crappy apartment, sharing with two others and paying 6000 a month. Could you suggest where she could begin looking for a serviced apartment? She is only very young and its her first time in Hong Kong, so she is just finding her feet.
Any advise is apreciated.
Cheers |

I suppose it depends on where she wants to live. Ones out at the Gold Coast are advertised at around $8500. |

I will also suggest your daughter check out the serviced accommodation at the Gold Coast. I did rent one myself and was very happy with the service. I paid around 14,000 a month as I only wanted the flat for 6 weeks. I think the price of 8,500 would be for a long term lease. There are good bus and mini bus links - 35 minutes to Central-and it can be a lot quieter than many other places in HK. |

It seems as if she is fairly independent for one so "very young"! |
